Letter to Charles Barber requesting five pairs of quarter dollar dies for the New Orleans Mint. Charles Barber was the Chief Engraver for the mint. He is perhaps best known for his firey confrontations with Augustus St. Gaudens. The two did not get along. St. Gaudens was a seriously accomplished artist, engraver and sculptor with great vision, while Barber was a cut and dry man who opted for simplicity. This letter is printed on Philadelphia Mint Stationary. Fine. $1,100.
