COLORADO OIL AND PETROLEUM STOCKS Colorado Oil certificates, photographs, and ephemera Oil in Colorado was discovered at Florence in 1862. Significant finds were made during the 1880's, as well as throughout the west. Continental Oil, a marketing company, bought control of United Oil, of Florence, Colorado in 1888 which gained control of the region's oil for their parent, Standard Oil. They had enjoyed near complete control of the region's oil market since the late 1860's, according to The Oil and Gas Journal in 1959. After gaining a monopoly on the oil market throughout the United States, Theodore Roosevelt made moves to limit the monopoly, and ultimately the US Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of Standard Oil. (Sound familiar?) In 1934, they were ordered split into 34 companies. In the Rockies, only one oil field was developed before the 1920's, Salt Creek, Wyoming. Significant discoveries were not made in Colorado until well after 1935. Indeed, no pipelines carrying crude oil were built until after that time, though much oil was transported by truck. By 1959, there was only one pipeline exporting oil to other states and this one to Utah and Wyoming. By comparison, Texas and California had dozens of pipelines by that time. The following collection is a wonderful representation of Colorado's pioneer effort at oil exploration during its development period in America. (Oil and Gas Journal, v57 no. 5, Jan 28, 1959). 2739.
