INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our Western Americana, Auction #9!

We are excited to be offering a wide variety of material in this sale. Our usual fare of rare (and some not-so-rare) stock certificates and ephemera is heavily complimented in this sale by tokens, medals, bottles, maps and more.

Highlights of California include. The Native Sons of the Golden West medals, badges, ribbons and programs is a beautiful collection not to be missed. The California Octagonals sections offers a great variety of these rare $50 gold facsimile pieces -- read the story on pages 73 and 74. And, of course, Railroadiana fans won't want to miss the section of California Rails on pages 102-104. Other highlights include the collection of 26 Wood River Region, Idaho photographs with fantastic views of the Minnie Moore mine, the IXL Saloon, Palace Club and much more, most of which are c1890. Several ore bags are offered in the California section -- these were hot items in our last fixed price catalogs. For token collectors, many tokens are scattered throughout this volume, with many from Nevada's Esmeralda County and several from Lincoln, Lyon, Nye and Ormby Counties as well. The New Mexico section features a good number of tokens too!

Of particular interest to Colorado collectors will be the Leadville, San Juan and Cripple Creek regions. There is a fantastic collection of early maps, both printed and hand-drawn, and an outstanding group of ribbons and meadals dating fromt he 1800s through about 1910. This is the largest amount of Colorado material we have ever offered, and we are extremely pleased with the diversity, quality and rarity.

An important feature of our catalogs are the short stories associated with each lot. We have short biographical sketches of at least 100 Colorado notable personalities, many of the mine discoverers, financiers, and businessmen. It is important to note that Colorado’s history developed differently than other important mining states such as Nevada. In Colorado, the money made from the mines was generally kept in State, while the rich mines in Nevada made their money for Californians and eastern interests. Thus the notable Coloradans take on additional meaning, particularly for autograph collectors.

We are hoping that just about every collector will be able to find something of interest in this sale! You can also email us your bids, call them in or use the online bidsheet at www.holabird.org.
