913. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Trade Token. The Northern Inc./(design)/Goldfield,/Nev./ L. A. Rub. Stamp Co.//GF/2.5 c/IT al, rd, 21 mm, brass centered, vf. This is the Northern Saloon established at Goldfield in 1905 by Tex Rickard, a friend and associate of Wyatt and Virgil Earp when they both lived in Nome, Alaska, where Wyatt had owned the Dexter Saloon. There, Wyatt Earp had also worked for Tex Rickard as his floor boss, a fact that may stand behind the rumor that Wyatt Earp was partners with Rickard in Goldfield. That rumor is substantiated, but there is a strong likelihood that Wyatt and /or Virgil Earp were silent partners with Tex Rickard in Goldfield's Northern Saloon. Both of these brothers were professional saloon keepers as well as lawmen in their later years, though Wyatt had bowed out of direct involvement in the saloon game in his later years. Wyatt had promised his wife, Josie, that he would get out of the business before it killed him. But he may have had a hard time living up to that promise. When he sold the Dexter saloon in Nome, Alaska, he came away with $85,000 in his pocket. He and Josie moved to California, but soon packed up to follow the adventurous silver boom in Tonopah, Nevada. He came to town with his friend, Al Martin, driving a freight wagon, with the stated intention of starting a freight line with Martin, but their wagon was loaded with the "software" to run a saloon. Within eleven days the two of them had opened "Wyatt Earp's Northern Saloon" in Tonopah in February, 1902, two doors down from the Miners Union Hall on Main Street. Wyatt also served as U. S. Marshall while in Tonopah, but his main business was running the saloon, as well as an overland freight, hauling ore from Tonopah to the railroad. Wyatt left Nevada and returned to California later that year, but his wife Josie recalled later visits to the area, and meeting Tex Rickard and Virgil Earp in Goldfield on a number of occasions. Virgil Earp had owned a saloon in Vanderbilt, California, near Nevada's Searchlight mining district. Virgil and Wyatt owned some claims near Searchlight . Both Virgil Earp and Tex Rickard arrived in Goldfield in 1904, and Rickard opened the Northern Saloon in Goldfield, most likely with his good friend Earp as a silent partner. By this time, Virgil was well recovered from his wounds received during the 1881 gunfight in Tombstone at the OK Corral, though that healing process had taken a full four years. Virgil was sworn in as deputy sheriff of Esmeralda County, and also worked at the National Club as a "special officer". He was known associate of Rickard at the Northern Saloon as a family friend and a drinking buddy; whether he was silent partner in the saloon is speculative, but entirely consistent with his background and business propensities. That the saloon bore the same name as Wyatt's saloon of Tonopah, a name which hearkened back to the days Rickard and Wyatt Earp were associated in Nome, Alaska, is probably no coincidence. Virgil Earp died in Goldfield on October 19, 1905, one of many men stricken with pneumonia. Records show that two years after his death, though Goldfield continued to boom, the Northern Saloon was gone, and so was the Earps' friend, Tex Rickard. This is the second of the four known that we have offered in the past two years. Both are from long-time collectors. (Boyer, Kintop & Rocha) Est. $750-1500

921. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Diamondfield Black Butte RE-Organized MC. Incorporated in Nevada in 1910. Issued to Hendrickson, Hall & Co. for 100 shares in 1912. Uncancelled. Signed by president L. L. Patrick and secretary H.C. Clapp. Patrick was a mining man from Cripple Creek who made his fortune promoting stock investments, and who happened to be one of G. Rice's competitors. But unlike Rice, he never got caught. Vignette features seated female allegorical figure holding wreath up to sky, with Indian tribal scene and cityscape on either side, in background. Green border. Owned the Black Butte mine located in the Goldfield district. The primary ore shoots were the Faltand Quartzite veins that crosscut volcanic rocks. In 1918, most of the work was by lessees who did mine much below the 100' level. The property is described in detail in the USGS Prof. Paper 66. (Mines Hndbk, 1918, p. 1082-83) Top edge rough and quite dirty, but still very fine. Est. $25-50.

922. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Forward Mining Development Co Prospectus 1904. "'Facts' About Goldfield Nevada. The Greatest Gold Camp in the World" is written on the front. Vignette of female figure standing next to flag bearing company name. The prospectus first gives a history about the mine, and at the same time, cleverly, downplays their neighbor's, Tonopah, gold production. As was stated in the previous lot, Goldfield Mascot MC was one of Forward's subsidiaries. The brochure gives the company's production in 1903 ($2,000,000) to date, and predicts the production in 1904 as over $3,000,000. It then goes on to discuss the grade of ore (of course very high), proudly claiming its place in the "mineral belt". Many testimonials throughout, including the opinion of a Los Angeles Mining Engineer, who claims Goldfield to be "an abnormally rich camp". Many photos of the different mines owned by the company, including the Jumbo Mine, January Mine, and the Black Butte Mine. Very fine, and very well written. Black print on tan paper. 9 x 4". Est. $ 25-50.

923. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Bull Dog Mines Corp. Incorporated in Wyoming 1906. Issued to J. Fletcher for 20 shares, cert #2132, in 1908. Signed by president and R. H. Pratt secretary. Vignette of cabin and covered wagon in woods with snow capped mountains as backdrop. Gold border, seal and background design. Uncancelled. 8 X 11. Minor wear to edges with some chips. We believe these companies are active in Goldfield, Nevada not Goldfield, Colorado. The timing is right for the major players and investors of Cripple Creek to begin flowing into the new booming town of Goldfield. We have never come across a bonafide Goldfield, Colorado stock certificate. There is a Bull Dog claim within the Goldfield, NV area. (Ransome, 1909) Fine. Est. $25-50

924. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield-Diamond MC. Incorporated in Arizona. Issued to H.W. Lyseter for 100 shares in 1905. Uncancelled. Signed by vice-president J.M. Miletrile (?) and secretary Albert Brady. Vignette of man pushing mine cart with ore out of the mine. Mill in distance. Brown border, and underprint, with two small vignettes of miners in lower corners. 7 x 12.25. Very fine. Est. $25-50

925. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Emperor MC. Incorporated in Wyoming. Issued to Geo B. Stineman for 5000 shares, cert #210, in 1905. Signed by W. M. Downing president and C. M. Sumner secretary. Vignette of spread winged eagle. Orange border with green seal and background design. Uncancelled. 8 X 11. Letter included to Geo Stineman dated 1905. Very fine. Est. $25-50

926. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Mascot MC Prospectus. Begins with an introduction about the company and its subsidization with the Forward Mining Development Co. It then goes on to talk about the property, how many claims the company owns, such as the Mascot, Creseus, Eugenia and Lady Roxburgh. Through professional appearance and writing, the company asserts its veracity, unlike some of the other prospectuses of the time. Gilt lettering on the cover, with three little bags labeled "gold". The print inside is red and black. Very good condition, only minor tearing at the bottom portion of the spine. 16 pp. 9 x 4". Est. $25-50.

927. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Ruby Hill MC. Incorporated in Arizona. Issued to Paul E. Twitty for 1000 shares in 1907. Uncancelled. Signed by vice-president J.R. Young and secretary C.D. Weimer. No vignette, but fancy type in masthead. Black print on crème paper. Creases where certificate was folded into thirds. 6.5 x 10. The name refers to two great Nevada camps, Ruby Hill and Goldfield. But there is still a possibility that this is for a mine in Goldfield Colorado or Arizona. Not listed in Ransome. Very fine. Est. $25-50.

928. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Sierra MC. Incorporated in Colorado. Issued to James P. Morris for 500 shares in 1905. Uncancelled. Signed by E.A. Colburn as president and J.A. Wright as secretary. Colburn was an important Cripple Creek figure who owned part of the Strong Mine, & all of the Ajax Mine, a crossover from Cripple Creek financier to Goldfield. Very nice certificate with a vignette of Goldfield in the masthead. The certificate is lime green, with a cloudy treatment. Minor tearing at creases where the certificate was folded into thirds. This company had four claims in the heart of the Goldfield district (Clason, Mining claim map of 1907) Very fine. 8.5 x 11. Est. $300-500.

929. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Souvenir Spoon. "Joshua Tree, Goldfield, Nev" with engraving of a Joshua Tree in the spoon's bowl. Gold pan and pack mule at the end of the handle, and hoist rope in silver wrapped around the handle. Very rare. The Joshua Tree is a curiosity to non-Nevadans, as it looks much like the yucca tree, but is rare and occurs nowhere else on the earth. 1 x 5.5. Est. $100-300.

930. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Goldfield Souvenir Spoon. Small spoon with silver hoist rope wrapped around the back of gold pan and down the handle. Miner's pack mule and "Goldfield" engrave in gold plated bowl. The top of the handle has a gold pan, displaying artificial nuggets, and a pack mule. Rare. Very fine. .75 x 4. Est. $100-300.

933. Esmeralda. Goldfield. January Jones Leasing & Developing Co. Incorporated in Arizona in 1905. Issued to Mary P. Heald for 200 shares in 1905. Cancelled. Signed by president Jno. Jones and secretary Harry Yeaman. Vignette of men working in mine, with one calling up shaft to raise the ore bucket. Four smaller vignettes in corner featuring miner using pickaxe, and two small vignettes at right and left borders featuring a miner holding mineral in hand. Black border and print. "Cancellation" written across certificate, and slashes across signatures in black ink. John Jones was a partner on one of the first leases of Goldfield mining properties. He and his partners L. L. Patrick and Zeb Kendall leased the January and February claims for one year, and mined more than $350,000 from them, producing some of the first rich gold ore of the district. Jones was a flamboyant character and his lease of the January property and subsequent fortune caused him to be regular front page news. Hence, just after his lease was up on the January claim, before the Goldfield MC took over, Jones formed the January Jones Leasing and Dev Co to do more of the same. Their profits would never make the books under that name because the ground they mined was always leased. (Zanjani) Very fine. 8 x 11. Est. $25-50.
934. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Mohawk-Florence Leasing & MC. Incorporated in Arizona in 1906. Issued to C.F. Jonasson & Co. for 100 shares in 1907. Uncancelled. Signed by 3rd vice-president J.F. Green border and masthead, with orange US design in underprint at the bottom. Very colorful! 9.5 x 12.5. Very fine, fold down center, with small rip at the top of the fold. This certificate is nearly identical other than where Emerald is printed, Chico is printed. The Hardin district is located at Black Rock and the district now has that name. Hardin City was at the center of the district, but it did not last more than a year or so. The Hardin district is not mentioned by Stretch (1866), White (1867-68), Browne or Lincoln. John Bidwell was a California Pioneer, and settle at Bidwell, now Chico. Bidwell worked for John Sutter, fought with him in the Mexican War of 1844 and later with Fremont. He was with Sutter right after Marshall's discovery and found gold on the Feather River. Bidwell was in politics, was a friend of the Indians and was a source of political and economic stability for the region. The Hardin district had a fair bit of prospecting in the 1860's but it did not continue much longer. Bidwell must have had great hope in Hardin, but any ore that may have been present was played out early. (Tingley, Bancroft, Thrapp). Extremely fine. Est. $400-600

940. Humboldt. Indian. Van De Water G&SMC of Nevada. Organized in New York. Issued to J.R. Mullany for 100 shares in 1881. Uncancelled. Signed by president James Casey and secretary Harry McGeory. Mines were located in Humboldt Co, in the Indian District. Black border. Fancy masthead. 6.5 x 11.5. Production in 1883 for the company was 1065 tons grossing $745,000 with about $400/ton profit after cost of production. (Burchard, 1884, p.530) Very fine. Est. $150-300
941. Humboldt. Unionville. Humboldt Register Newspaper, March 25,1865. Vol. 2, #48, 4pp. W.J. Forbes, editor. This paper is printed on a thin hard paper stock, slightly yellowed. At first glance it appeared not original because it is not on rag paper like most other papers of this era. But we checked an original, and even the ink imperfections in the masthead match. There are not as many ads as you might expect from Unionville. Blake & Co. assayers, Humboldt Express, and 2 hotels. Lists of Humboldt mining company meetings, incorporations, assessments, etc. Some folds, otherwise very fine. Extremely rare. Est. $300-500

LINCOLN COUNTY

943. Lincoln. Nevada Land Deed describing the division the undivided share of a meadow between James Rice and Frank Walker of the Laughlin Claim. Rice sold his portion of the meadow to Hans Olson for $400 in 1881. The deed is signed by Henry Rice, possibly one of the original board of directors of Wells Fargo. Olson was the proprietor of a saloon bearing his name, The Hans Olson Saloon. There are known trade tokens from the saloon, which are very popular with token collectors. 14 x 8.5. Est. $50-100

PRENTIC MINING 26 PINE ST. (star) NEW YORK around outside of center picture of mill site. 31.5mm. This medal commemorated the first pour of silver from Pahranagat, a very remote silver camp in eastern Nevada. It had a short-lived boom in 1865-7, then fizzled, never again gaining decent production. It died even as a ghost town by 1900, with little or nothing left today. This specimen is one of the finest, if not the finest we have had in twenty years. It appears to be uncirculated, with clean fields and bright high spots. It is the only antiquarian mill product piece from Nevada. Est. $300-500.

This report is a submission by the club for the development and production of the Pioche Mining District, detailing the possibilities for profit. Several photographs are printed of the of the mill, claiming a 250 ton ore extraction, and how that could be "enlarged to 500 tons with a small additional cost." Each one shows a slightly different view of the partially build mill. The other folder contains 4 photos from May 20, 1913, when only the foundation had been built. The last two are larger at 8 x 9.5. One is of the furnace, and the other is of two men standing next to the furnace. All are in excellent condition. Est. $200-400.
949. Lincoln. Tem Piute. Tem Piute M&MC. Certificate number 92. Incorporated in Delaware in 1900. Issued to John P. McLearn for 1500 shares in 1909. Both corporate signatures are unintelligible. Bust portrait of Indian chief figure. Green border with black print. Four stock transfer stamps at upper right corner, around which there are three tears. 9 x 11. The district was discovered by D. Service and William Plumb in 1868. At one time it was thought than an immense vein of ore, the Inca Lode, ran through the district. The post office pulled out in 1883 and was all but dead until the Wah Chang Trading Co incorporated the entire district under the name of Black Rock MC. Base of operations for this company moved to Caliente in 1957 and once again the post office pulled. A quite place along the Extra Terrestrial Highway today. (Garlson, 1974, p231-32) Very fine. George Graham Rice: This special section includes a number of pieces signed by, issued to and involved with George Graham Rice. Rice was one of the biggest stock promoters and flim flam artists in the West. It wound him up in jail. The book lot offered below is the story as told by Rice of how easy it was swindle people.

954. Mineral. Regent. Rawhide Coalition MC. Incorporated in Nevada. Issued to C.F. Belser for 100 shares in 1910. Uncancelled. Signed by president E. W. King and secretary R. M. Van Dorn. Nice certificate with underground vignette of man working pneumatic drill, within a panoramic vignette of view of mining district. Green border and black print. 7.5 x 11. The Rawhide Coalition owned the 8 claims covering 160 acres located on Grutt Hill, Hooligan Hill and part of Balloon Hill and the ground in between. The initial discovery rush was in 1906 by a coalition of 8 prospectors. George Graham Rice soon was able to procure this ground for the Nat C. Goodwin & Co forming the Rawhide Coalition Co in 1907. The company was formed for both the purpose of stock promotion and to form a productive mine. Some of the early ore that came out this company's ground assayed at $2000/ton. The town boomed with even Tex Rickard opening another Northern Saloon at Rawhide. It is reported that the Northern brought in $2000 in liquor sales the first month and $25,000 in gambling receipts in the first day. The Goodwin Co and Rice soon learned the financial trouble the country was suffering in 1907 was not helping their promotional attempts. They decided that having the stock sold from Reno, Nevada was too far from the true American gamblers of the east. That is way on both of the certificates offered Reno, Nevada dateline is crossed out and New York is the dateline. The company went on to failure. The Rawhide district only produced some $2 million in ore in those early days. There is still active mining in that district today. (Rice) Very fine. Est. $50-100.

955. Mineral. Regent. Rawhide Coalition MC. Incorporated in Nevada. Issued to C.F. Belser for 100 shares in 1910. Uncancelled. Signed by president E.W. King and secretary R.M. Van Dorn. Nice certificate with underground vignette of man working pneumatic drill, within a panoramic vignette of view of mining district. Green border and black print. 7.5 x 11. See lot above. Very fine. Est. $50-100.

956. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Four different mining stock certificates signed by Geo. Graham Rice. Rice was a convicted mine swindler, for which he spent two separate occasions in prison, and had the feds on him constantly. Some of his ventures attempted to do well, but his reputation was so shaky that most people made for the exit when his name was uttered. Rice was a born promoter. He quickly learned that there was a fortune to be made in mining stock promotion, which proved to be easier and more profitable than gambling. Rice and partner L.L. Sullivan formed the Sullivan Trust in Goldfield, which failed in 1907, causing a west-wide financial panic, hurting the legitimate businessmen like George Wingfield and G. Nixon. Rice was a tricky devil who seldom operated in a legitimate manner. Most of his holdings were worthless. The trick was to show the property, take in as much "seed" money as possible, do as little work as possible, then try to sell the property to someone else, keeping the money. The shareholders never saw a dime. Their only hope, like dot com companies of today...if the stock went up, they made money. Finally Rice swindled one to many times, landing himself in prison. Monster Chief MC incorporated in Delaware in 1916. Issued to G.G. Rice for 100 shares in 1916. Uncancelled. Signed by president J.M.B. Ringley and secretary R.N. Sneron. 959. Nevada. General. Five copies of My Adventures with Your Money, by George Graham Rice with introduction by Hugh Shamburger. Copyright 1968 by Stanley W. Paher. Nevada Publications, Las Vegas. Hardcover with dust jacket. "The color dust jacket is by Las Vegas artist Roy E. Purcell. Entitled, "The Promoter," the etching depicts a mining camp entrepreneur in a central Nevada mining camp during the height of speculation in 1907." Four of the five books are still in shrink-wrap. The opened copy shows surface wear and chips to dust jacket. 333 pp including index, 7 x 10". Illustrated with photos and original source material. This book was originally published in a series of articles in a magazine. Stan Paher printed it in book version for the first time. The stories written by Rice chronicle his life as a mine promoter par excellence. Rice typically would buy a mine, float stock, then sell the company, keeping the money. He spent several years in jail for fraud from his mining rackets, but never understood why he alone was prosecuted, and his competitors were not. (Nor do I. - fh) The book tells great stories about Nevada mining camps. Est. $75-125

This aluminum, 12 scallop token was thoroughly researched by Hal Dunn, who gave the research to John Schilling, who gave it to me, and then to the Historical Society. Unfortunately, I did not retain a copy. It is guaranteed Virginia City, Nevada. Est. $250-350

986. Storey. Virginia City. Williams & Prater, Virginia City, Nevada Trade Token, c1888-1898. Thomas T. Williams began a saloon business in Virginia City about 1880 at 3 South C Street. About 1885 Williams took on Mr. Jeffery as a partner, and two years later replaced Jefferys with N. C. Prater. The two ran the saloon business there for about ten years. In 1894 the business was worth from $1,000 to $2,000, according to the Pickens & Fulton Commercial Agency Book. By 1899, Williams was again on his own, but only for a short time before he sold out or retired. Prater started a general grocery store and did fairly well. During the heyday of Williams and Prater, Virginia City had nearly twenty saloons. This token is the only octagonal token from Virginia City and is very desirable. [refs: Bishop's Directory of VC, etc. 1878; Dun 1890; Bradstreet 1900; 1886 McKinney's Pacific Coast Dir.; 1883 McKinney's Dir.; Pickens & Fulton] Est. $100-200

No vignette, but a small bald eagle emblem to the right. Black border and print. 25 cent revenue stamp at left margin. Extremely fine. 5 x 9.5. Chandler played an important role in Nevada's history. He took part in the 1860 expedition against the "Pah-Ute" after the burning of William's Station. As a poorly armed group who didn't believe the Indians would fight, they were defeated. Chandler may have been the only member of the volunteers to survive, which he did by jumping off a cliff into the Truckee River and hiding in the river, under bushes for hours in the middle of winter. Very fine. Est. $500-700

989. Storey. Virginia. Autograph. John MacKay. Agency of the Bank of California. (Check). Issued to W. Husgrove for $287.50 in 1869, by J. MacKay. Check Number 75 Uncancelled. Black, double lined border, two orange 2 cent US revenue and 2 cent Nevada state revenue stamps at left end. 3 x 8. No printer noted. One of the four "Bonanza Kings", MacKay went from a penniless placer miner in 1860 when he arrived on the Comstock. He quickly gained experience and bought into the Hale & Norcross with partner James C. Fair. Under their control the company soon began paying dividends. Their profits allowed them to secure other mines. He was intimately familiar with the details of the operations of his mines, making daily trips underground to observe first hand, the progress being made and was considered to be the most the most knowledgeable of the Comstock Lode. He also was known as a kind-hearted and generous man. (DeQuille, 1974, The Big Bonanza, p. 399-401) Money from his fortune funded the MacKay School of Mines at the University of Nevada, Reno. Slight yellowing at edges, extremely fine. Est. $50-100

990. Storey. Virginia City and NV Co., CA. Autograph Album of Henry Shaw, 1885-6, and Photo Album of daughter Frankie Shaw, Oakland, CA. c.1924). The Shaw family, J.B. and Ben, owned a furniture store in Virginia City. Ben Shaw, Henry's Uncle, later bought a drug store and photography business. The autograph album has signatures of a number of V.C. notables. Some are quite amusing, including one note written in Morse Code, dated 1885, probably from a telegraph. Other notes include wonderful artwork, such as a minstrel group dressed like a barbershop quartette, with the letters of Henry's name in their mouths, mimicking song. The photo album appears to be views of Frankie and family in the Bay Area, with numerous unlabeled mining shots of the same mine, possibly the Mountain House Drift Mine. Includes photos of J.B. Shaw, etc. Some photos are torn out of the album. 89 photos, 2" square to 3 x 5. At least 15 are of the mine and miner's cabins. Also Seven cabinet photographs circa 1880-90 of members of the Shaw family. 995. Storey. Virginia City. Sutro Tunnel Co. Issued to R.N. Graves for 250 shares in 1868. Cancelled. Fine certificate with a vignette at left featuring man holding a pickaxe. Signed by president Adolph Sutro. 25 cent Revenue stamp below vignette. Appears to have been stapled at one time in upper left corner. Black print and border. "Cancelled" written across certificate, and slashes over signature. Adolph Sutro came to California early in the Gold Rush. Sutro was active in real estate in San Francisco but soon left for Virginia City to get rich. He built a mill which soon burned down. This led to the grandiose idea that he could develop a way to dewater the tunnels of the Comstock to allow for deeper mining. In 1866, Sutro had begun financing the Sutro Tunnel Co and by 1869 work had begun on the tunnel itself. The large Comstock mining men with their influence with the Bank of California and the Nevada Bank of San Francisco decided that Sutro's tunnel was not what they wanted or they were very jealous of his potential success and managed to sabotage any further funding of the Sutro Tunnel Co. Sutro did manage to finish the tunnel in 1878, but the Comstock mining men reneged on their contracts with Sutro and took him to court. Sutro lost, sold his shares in the company and returned to San Francisco and the real estate business. The Sutro tunnel was the greatest engineering feat of the nineteenth century which connected all the mines of the Comstock at the 1850' level. (Filer II) This certificate does not have any damage or tears at the left edge and has the original 25 cent revenue stamp. Very fine. 6.5 x 11. Est. $1500-2500
