ALTURAS COUNTY

Alturas. Wood River.
The following collection of rather spectacular mining photographs was found by a collector/dealer in Southern California a number of years ago. We are proud to offer this important collection. Many of the photographs here are possibly unique, and offer an outstanding view of life in the early days of Idaho's mining camps.
Gold was discovered in small quantities here just after the Boise Basin discoveries of 1862. Miners came in groups for about two years, but since nothing worthwhile was located, miners moved on. One prospector, Warren Callahan, found lead ore in the form of galena, a lead sulfide. Little did these miners know that this lead sulfide also carried silver.
Callahan came back in 1873 and 1874 for more prospecting. With Indian trouble and the Bannock war, miners stayed away until 1879. By then, metallurgists had unraveled the secrets of metal separation in the rich lead-silver ores in Eureka, Nevada. Prospectors began to return to the area, not so much for the gold, but now for the silver. Among the other early prospectors were David Ketcham and Frank Jacobs, W. Broadhead and others. Small towns began to develop-among them Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue, Galena, Bullion City and Bradford. Ketchum was originally called Leadville, but the US Post Office rejected the name, and its founder soon became the namesake. Production started to take off in 1881 from mines such as the Queen of the Hills and Minnie Moore.
Idaho was quickly becoming known for its silver. In 1881, Idaho produced $1.3 million. Within a year, they were up to $2 million, though they were still ranked sixth in the United States behind Colorado (Leadville), Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Montana, according to Albert Williams in Mineral Resources of the United States, 1883. The importance of the gold and silver mined in the USA to the world at the time was not understated by Williams: "One third of all the gold and one half of all the silver annually produced in the world are supplied by the mines of the United States."
Getting the mines of Idaho and the Wood River region off the ground was a difficult task. Though Idaho was producing silver and gold, western financiers were used to the massive riches of the Comstock and the California gold region. Idaho had to make it on its own. "The San Francisco people, to whom until recently miners had to look for capital to develop these mines, became utterly disgusted, and had no confidence in any mine inside the borders of Idaho. It is scarcely necessary to state that this condition of affairs was not the fault of the mines, but of the people who manipulated the stocks" or so thought Mr. C. G. Yale in his detailed report to Horatio Burchard, the Director of the Mint in 1881.
The photographers of the period were few and far between. Remote mining camps did not have much to offer in terms of revenue to photographers. They preferred established towns where a studio could produce daily revenue. Throughout the west, photographs of emerging mining camps are thus rare, and Idaho was no exception. Only a handful of photographers are reportedly known from the Wood River region during the first ten years.
A summary of the early photographers in Wood River can be assimilated from Carl Mautz's Biographies of Western Photographers, 1997. Professor Gilbert Butler was in Bellevue and Hailey. His gallery was on Main Street in 1883, and on the corner of First and Bullion in 1884. Frank M. Stamper was in Hailey in 1883, as was Charles Tate, who took photos for the Union Pacific photo
car. He was in Hailey in May to June of 1883, and Bullion, ID in August, and presumably in some of the other camps in between. Fred J. Pilliner was in Ketchum in 1889-90, and notably took pictures of the Wood River Winter of 1890. He also had galleries in CA and MT with his brother. W. C. Thompson had a gallery in 1905. In this collection, only 2 of the photos have photographers identified, and both are not local photographers. Curiously, there are no photographers listed in the 1883 McKenney Directory for the area.

Border at left gone, but image fine. Bottom right corner was broken off and was repaired long ago. Circa 1885. Est. $200-400

142. Wood River Region. Doniphan? Outstanding bird's eye view of a small town in a canyon. The image is crystal clear. The signs of merchants visible are: Shea Blackaby Merchandise, Alta House, Combination. I was unable to locate this town in the McKenney's 1883 Directory, but unfortunately it lists proprietors, instead of the name of the establishment. The same holds true for the McKenney 1886 Business directory. There are no signs of any mines on the hillsides. A review of regional newspapers of the period would nail this photograph. The image is 8 x 9.5", and generally very fine. 1" piece broken from lower left and repaired, no harm. Mounted on crème mat with 0.25" margin. On reverse is M. M. Hazeltine, Baker City, Oregon. Needless to say, this is not Baker City. Circa 1885. Est. $250-500

Signed by president John Barth and secretary M.C. Morgan. Very nice certificate without a vignette, but fancy masthead. Black border and print. 6 x 11. This company built the California & Oregon Coast RR for which there are four rare pieces: two prospectuses and two extracts from engineering reports, one of each written in French. This company was incorporated in Nevada. The prospectuses give testimonials to support the construction of the Standard Gauge RR, which would extend a total of 178.5 miles. The lines would enable the shipment of lumber which "would certainly yield a handsome return for the amount expended in building the line," says H.L. Gilkey of the FIB of Southern Oregon. The extracts do much the same as the prospectuses, only these contain testimonials from the train engineers. " 'The principal items of freight will be lumber, supplies for mines and smelters, ore, marble, and lime, farm products and general supplies...There is not lacking the sources of traffic nor the plans of construction to make this Railroad a successful enterprise.' " We couldn't help but include these in the sale. They would truly add to anyone's collection! This medal was struck in the first part of 1906, perhaps for a shareholders meeting. It was dead within months, having been in existence for just one year. It was taken over by the North American Copper Co. The mine was at Burkemont. "The old management lied atrociously in its advertisements until the reorganization in 1905..." The new management couldn't overcome the past problems, hence the creation of the North American Copper Co. (Ref: 1908 Copper Hdbk). Est. $50-150.

155. Baker. Cracker Creek district. North Pole-Columbia mines. Three photographs; two showing the North Pole Mine and one of the Columbia. North Pole photos (5x7 & 4-1/2 x 8) taken from hillside show mill buildings in foreground and aerial tramway leading from mines upslope. Both are similar but taken from slightly different locations. Columbia mill and mine (4-1/2 x 8) shows 4 large mill buildings and probable office with dumps amid pine forest. These two mines were located near each other on the North Pole-Columbia lode, a vein traceable for nearly 5 miles across Cracker and Fruit Creeks in Baker County. Production from the North Pole between 1895 and 1908 amounted to $2.485 million and from the Columbia between 1897 and 1916 was $3.639 million. Recovered ounces of gold and silver were roughly the same for the North Pole and presumably the Columbia. Total production grade was about $15.63 per ton. Both mines were only intermittently worked after 1916 (Brooks & Ramp, 1968, pp. 60-61, 74). Glued to pages cut from scrap book; North Pole photos on opposite faces of same page. Est. $100-200

156. Baker. Cracker Creek district. Mammoth Mine. Photograph (5x6-1/2) of the hoist house, conveyor, mill buildings and office. Ground partially covered with light snow, conifers in background. The mine was developed by a 300 ft shaft and drifts, and production prior to 1931 was estimated at $40,000. Bullion was 500 to 600 fine produced from veins in granodiorite. Production from the Belle of Baker, located a few hundred feet west of the Mammoth and on the same vein, was about 10 times that of the Mammoth. Wire gold was locally recovered from thin quartz seams and fractures from the Bell of Baker. (Brooks & Ramp, 1968, pp. 72 & 76). Glued to page cut from scrap book; on opposite face is photo cut from magazine of the Bonanza Mill. Est. $75-150

157. Oregon Territory. Josephine County. Report of Road Drivers to County Commissioners. Dec. 2, 1857. Two handwritten pages (both sides of a single sheet) on blue, lined-stationery to the Board of County Commissioners regarding a proposed route of a wagon road between the residence of Abel George, via Vannoy's ferry to the Heap ranch on Appelgate Creek. Large tear down center where map folds. 14 x 24". The second map is a horizontal view of the Waldo Copper Mining District. The Waldo Copper Mine is located to the east of the Illinois River, near Takilma. Scale is 1"= 800'. Excellent condition. 38 x 26". Both maps are undated, but are presumably from around the same time as the stock certificate (1902). Est. $200-400
