A nice mill was built just after 1900 which operated for several years. Unfortunately, Couch & Carpenter missed the district when they wrote the production summary of the state in 1943. I spent two seasons working in the mines in that district, and have been in every mine there and can easily assure you that there are very large stopes quietly testifying of real production.-fh. This certificate is completely torn along the two folds, and there is tape residue along the left fold. We did not repair it, but would do so upon request at no cost.  Rare. Est $25-50

William Stanford is probably one of Leland Stanford’s brothers. He had 6 brothers, none of whom were named by Bancroft, but Bancroft stated that all of his brothers were engaged in mining.  “Five of his brothers had arrived on the banks of the Sacramento, and were successfully engaged in mining and trade…” They “were anxious that Leland should join them,” stated Oscar Shuck in his Representative and Leading Men of the Pacific, 1869. They defaulted on some loans in 1885 and went into receivership.  The original founder, Anson Stokes (Stokes Castle) took over the new company in 1888.  The company owed its success to Stokes, who saw the need for important changes in the way Austin did their rail and mining business.  Stokes ran a tunnel 6000 feet underground under Lander Hill for exploration.  He also formed the Austin Mining Co. to mine ores. In 1897, Stokes built the Stokes castle just outside the Austin town limits for his son, a recent graduate of Columbia with a medical degree.  Tasker Oddie, later governor of Nevada, found that one of Stokes’ employees had embezzled $300,000. It stopped the Railroad dead for awhile.  Myrick, in Railroads of Nevada has a great story on this rail line. Very rare in any form.  Foxing along edges.  Very fine.  Est. $300-600

1037.      Lander.  Reese River.  Reese River Flouring Mill Co.  Incorporated in 1883.  Unissued.  Vignette of a woman carrying wheat stalks on her head.  Small vignette of wheat products at left.  Black border on yellow paper.  No printer noted.  5 1/4” x 10 1/2”.  Xf.  The great thing about this company is its location at Ledlie on the Nevada central railway, down at the foot of the canyon.  It was a flour mill instead of a silver mill. Est. $25-50

Pullinger.  Black border on yellow paper, no printer noted.  Wyandotte is featured in Brushwork Diary: Watercolors of Early Nevada, text and compilation by Michael J. Brodhead and James C. McCormick, with artwork by Walter S. Long.  Located in the Tem Piute Mining District of Lincoln County, the Wyandotte was a small producing mine, with a mere $720 in production recorded in Burchard in 1882.  Perhaps, though, the charm is caught in Long’s water color renderings.  Highlighted in his collection of paintings is a map of the mine and works, windlass, various shafts and a blacksmith shop.  All of these paintings capture the feel of “the mine” and “mining town” of the 19th century, recreating a landscape many artists of the 19th century would have loathed to attempt.  Full Color dust jacket, featuring a sample of the artwork, “Rescue Hose House”.  118 pp.  Both xf.  Est. $25-75

LYON

1066.      Lyon.  Blue Sulphur Spring.  Robinson MC.  Nevada Territorial.  Cert. #21.  Incorporated in Jan., 1864.  Issued to Rich Ross for 25 shares in 1864, uncancelled.  Signed by F. Tilford as president and W.W. Rice.  Black print on crème paper.  Commercial Print, printers.  25¢ Power of Attorney stamp at left.  5 1/4” x 9 1/2”, vf, edges a tiny bit rough. The Blue Sulphur Springs district is not listed in Stretch or Lincoln, or any other references we located, including the 1862 and 1863 Territorial directories. Their office was in Virginia City.  We were also unable to find a Robinson mine or sulphur spring in Lyon County. My tendency is to suspect the Palmyra area, but I have no proof. Often a group of miners would stake a batch of claims and call it their own district, usually with 15 or more claims comprising the district. The name may not have stuck, as the lack of specific reference material might indicate.  W. Price lived at the Virginia Hotel in VC, as did Rich Ross, a probable drinking buddy. Tilford was not a resident of the Virginia City area in 1863, but was an attorney in San Francisco. He was also a collections agent, thus was probably adept at getting money for his prospecting enterprise. Rare. Est. $600-1000

1067.      Lyon.  Carson River(?)  Carson River Placer Mining & Dredging Co.  Cert.#2859.  Incorporated in West Virginia in 1890.  Issued to Charles T. Falls for 20 shares in 1895.  Signed by president Peter Tomster and treasurer P. Haslteau.  Navy blue border, no vignette.  7” x 11 1/4”.  Vf, folded.  There is no organized district for this stock. Many of the important mills for the Comstock were on the Carson River between Gold Canyon and Empire.  Since their erection, the mills processed millions of tons of ore. But some of the gold and silver would escape in the tails, which were also mined and reprocessed. This company was one such company that went after the tailings. Rare. Est. $150-250

1068.      Lyon.  Carson River.  U-Nev-Ida Gold.  Cert.#C2096.  Incorporated in Delaware in 1917.  Issued to Edward F. Cragin for 100 shares in 1917.  Uncancelled.  Signed by president A.B. Lewis and secretary W. Kalslow.  Vignette of the “three states of gold”.  Green border.  Printed by NY Bank Note Co.  When former directors of the company formed the Comstock Lode Recovery Corp., U-Nev-Ida Gold went into litigation regarding the unethical attempts to sway land owners’ loyalty from U-Nev-Ida Gold to their new corporation.  One could see the potential problems that must have arose, as the company controlled much of the Carson River, where from gold recovery was proposed.  7 3/4” x 11”.  Est. $25-75
1069.      Lyon.  Dayton.  Rae Consolidated Gold Dredging Co.  Cert.#70.  Incorporated in Nevada in 1914.  Unissued, unsigned.  Vignette of a torch.  Brown border, printed by Goes.  This was a dredging operation. 8 1/4” x 12.  Xf.  Est. $15-25

1070.      Lyon.  Dayton.  Wells Fargo & Co’s/ Express/ Dayton, Nev. 1086.      Lyon.  Yerington.  Yerington Drilling Campaign, Winter 1913-1914.  Lot of 12 pcs.  Six holes were drilled during November, 1913 and April, 1914.  There is a sheet for each of the drill holes and the data which includes depths and assays.  There are four sheets where several of the drill holes were plotted and a interpretive cross section of the geologic was superposed.  There are two sheets that show the statistical cost and time required for the drilling campaign.  The drilling cost statement shows that in 1914, churn drilling cost $50 per foot.  That is hardly less than today’s costs when we can drill 200+ feet easily in an eight hour shift.  The other statistical sheet shows that in one shift (8-10 hours) only 13.90 feet was drilled.  Those numbers are so foreign today the exploration geologists.  One could almost hand dig that deep in one shift.  The company for whom the drilling campaign is noted on the sheets.  All are hand drawn on blue linen paper.  The single drill hole sheets have tears and pieces missing at the top of 5 of the 6 sheets.  Very fine.  Est. $100-300

Lance.  Unusual vignette of miners working underground.  Gray border and underprint, embossed seal.  “Principal office, Tonopah, Nevada” printed on certificate.  Uncancelled.  XF. 10 1/2 x 7 1/2.  Printer – Union Litho Co., Denver.  The property consists of 46 claims on 920 acres in the Mountain View district about 12 miles east of Yerington.  Fissures in granodiorite ran North 40 degrees and dip 65 degrees.  Ore minerals were mainly chalcocite, with chalcopyrite, chrysocolla, malachite, cuprite and occasional native copper.  Ore assayed 4 1/2 % to 8 % copper, 2 to 4 oz silver and 80 cents to $2 gold per ton.  In July of 1916 the company bought the Adelaide mine near Golconda.  The Adelaide mine had a contact deposit in limestone and granite, opened by a 300 foot shaft and 1450 feet of tunnels with a total of 6500 feet of openings.  In August 1917, monthly shipments were 200 tons of 5% ore.  Production in 1916 was from 400 to 600 tons per month.  In 1918 a group of five gold-silver claims were obtained, located 100 miles northwest of Tonopah.  Operations were suspended in 1918 due to heavy water flow in lower workings.  Suspension was continued until 1923.  (Ref: Mines Hdbk, 1918, pp1141-42; 1931, p1651; 1925, p1541.)  Rare.  Est. $50-100
