1102.      Nye.  Amargosa.  Amargosa Gold Dredging Potential Correspondence, 1959.  Lot of 3 pcs.  The first piece is a telegram to Neal M. Muir, who was located in Grand Junction, CO, sent by W. C. Hammon.  Hammon was hired to inspect some potential placer properties along the Amargosa River.  His telegram states that the interested parties should be prepared to spend $20,000 to $25,000 in exploratory work to establish the economic viability of the property.  Hammon thought there was some potential and was willing to continue investigating.  A manuscript letter dated the same day of the telegram and written after its receipt.  The writer reiterates much of the information from the telegram with more detail than is offered within the telegram.  He also indicates that the lab that a sample was sent to was no adequate and was trying to get more business without doing the work they wanted.  The name of the lab is not offered.  The letter is not signed and was probably a draft for a more formal typed letter to a partner or financial backer.  The paper used for the draft is on the reverse side of Pioneer Gold Dredging Company Shift Reports.  This company is listed as a dead company in the Mines Handbooks of 1949.  The relationship between Mr. Muir and the Pioneer Gold Dredging Co is unclear.  The Pioneer GDC, was owned by W. P. Hammon, for operations in Alaska.  The company was disbanded by before 1946.  W. P. Hammon went on to own the Hammon Goldfields Co, one of the most successful dredging companies in California history, and Hammon was an accomplished and respected Mining Engineer.  Very fine.  Est. $25-75

Swayer secretary.  Vignette at upper left of spread winged eagle.  Black border with gilt seal and gold safety print.  Mines at Bullfrog, Nevada in red underprint.  Datelined Goldfield, Nev.  Uncancelled.  Printer - Goldfield Publishing.  The Gold Bar is a gold deposit on the outskirts of the Bullfrog district to the northwest, about four miles out of Rhyolite.  It was discovered contemporaneously with Bullfrog in 1904 and by early 1907, had a shaft up to 350 feet deep.  A mill was built and production began.  Meanwhile, a neighboring property, the Homestake, had begun construction of a huge mill but it was found that some of their ore on Gold Bar property.  Ensuing lawsuits slowed production of both companies and local newspapers incorrectly called both shyster promotions.  Both fell victims of financial panics that followed the failure of the Sullivan Trust Co. in Goldfield.  The news writers were wrong.  The engineers of both mines had diligently driven crosscuts looking for high grade ores.  Some was found in both mines.  More so in the Homestake, but the Gold Bar just missed it - it was right under their hoist, as found Fred Holabird, in 1986, which resulted in an open pit mine.  Loftus was an honorable man who had made money at the Goldfield and Tonopah stocks, but at times was under attack by local newspapers.  Fold creases.  Extremely fine.  Est. $75-150

Foster.  Green Bullfrog vignette at center.  Green border on white paper.  5 1/2” x 9 1/2”.  Extremely Fine; very cute piece.  Printer – Kistler.  This is the classic Bullfrog certificate.  The Original Bullfrog Mines Syndicate, discovered by Shorty Harris in 1904, held the Original Bullfrog mine on “Bullfrog Mountain.” I used quotes because it is no more than a hill about 100 feet above the Bullfrog campsite off the west flank of the hill.  It was known by its unusual blue-green minerals in quartz with native gold.  Specimens of this ore were sent to Tiffany’s in New York for lapidary work, and a number of fobs were made.  A small test open pit mine was begun in the 1980’s.  It was not successful because they placed uncrushed mine dumps on the pad, and all the gold was in the quartz, which needed crushing.  There was a 50,000 ounce reserve in place in the late 1980’s, but it may have become sub economic under the present conditions.  This is the more rare of Mines Syndicate certificates.  Est. $400-500

1140.      Nye.  Bullfrog.  Pioneer Cons. MC.  Cert.#7483.  Incorporated in Wyoming.  Issued to James L. Leonard for 1000 shares in 1916.  Signed by president Wm. Tobin and secretary Chas. K. Consisted of 12 claims on 180 acres.  It was thought that high grade ore would be found in the main pioneer vein, but due to lack in funds, the company was unable to pick up the main vein, resulting in mediocre production.  (Ref: Weed 1918, p.1165).  Est. $50-100
1141.      Nye.  Bullfrog.  Pittsburgh Bullfrog MC, Ltd.  Cert.#1080.  Incorporated in South Dakota in 1905.  Issued to Israel W. Duross for 100 shares in 1906.  Signed by William Scott as president and Amille Bayley.  Two ladies flank the company’s masthead, rather than in a vignette.  The company’s name does not appear on the patent plats or Bradford’s map of 1905, nor is there a single mining claim which carries the Pittsburgh name.  William Scott is credited with the first discovery of ores at Lida, a small mining camp about 50 miles north of Bullfrog, in 1871, which took its ore to the revamped mill in Deep Spring Valley.  Green border.  Printed by the Republic Bank Note Co.  7 3/4” x 11”.  Vf, crease down center where folded.  Est. $75-150

1235.      Nye.  Tonopah.  Tonopah Mining District Map, 1902.  This early Tonopah claim map measures 32 x 44 and is printed on linen.  There are three black and white photos, two of which show full ore bags at two separate mines.  The third is a portrait photo of J. L. Butler captioned “Discoverer of the Famous Mizpah Lode.”  The main part of the map shows the claims with contour lines outlining the larger relief in the area.  Around the map, on three of the edges (left, top and right), are ads for mining companies, assayers and the like.  On the left and right, these ads measure 2 x 3; on the top edge, the ads are 3 x 3.  To the right are two inset maps.  The map closer to the top edge is of the Ray Mining District which shows the claims located along Clark Mountain and measures about 8 x 16.  The map shows the layout of the town of Ray.  Today there is no remnant left of this town.  The Ray district is located about 15 miles northeast of Tonopah and few miles southeast of the Hall deposit (moly and copper) that was begun by Anaconda in the late 1960’s on what was known as the Liberty property.  We have never seen a district map for Ray.  The second inset map is placed near the lower right corner and is titled, “Vicinity Map of the Tonopah Mining District.”  The southern extent of this inset map shows the Palmetto district, northwest to Luning, north to Austin and northeast to Belmont.  At the right of the map is a unique drawing showing tall cat-tail reeds that have a spider web connecting the them at the top.  From the web, a spider is dropping with the words “Going South” along his drop line.  The spider is dropping towards a bullfrog seated upon a lily pad.  The bullfrog appears to be waving with his right hand.  We strongly believe that this drawing is a very fancy “north” arrow.  We further believe that this drawing may be at the core of naming the more southerly district of Bullfrog.  The Bullfrog district was not discovered until about 1906, four years after publication of this map.  One could envision that the new discoveries were south towards the “Bullfrog”.  Just a speculation on our part.  This lower map inset, including the drawing, measures about 8 x 8.  Printed by Britton & Rey.  Compiled and published by Booker & Bradford, Engineers, Tonopah.  The left edge of the map as tear that affects about a one inch by half inch area but does not travel into the border.  Some fraying along the edges with “strings” of the linen hanging.  Otherwise extremely fine condition.  Rare.  Est. $1500-2000

1236.      Nye.  Tonopah.  Tonopah North Star Tunnel & Development Co.  Cert.#18551.  Issued to C.W. Harvey for 1000 shares in 1949.  Vignette of a spread-winged bald eagle perched atop a rocky peak.  Cancelled by hole punches. Signed by president Harvey and asst.-secretary Yeotyohn.  Blue border.  Printed by Franklin Lee Division-American Bank Note Co.  8” x 11 3/4”.  Vf.  In 1924, the company had 5 claims, with over 46 acres of gold and silver ore laden properties.  However, the company leased much property was lease and eventually taken over by the Tonopah Belmond Development Co.  As of 1949, the company was owned by the North Star Mine, which was formerly owned by the Tonopah North Star.  Some time thereafter, the company operations went dormant, but by 1955, the company was reactivated under new management.  It seems that the company’s long run evolved into exploration in other areas, such as oil.  As reported in the 1956 Mines Register, the company had rights to extensive oil exploration in Utah and Texas.  (Ref: Weed, 1925, p.1516-17; Mines Register, 1949, pp.269, 345; 1956, pp.421).  Est. $25-50

1249.      Nye.  Tybo.  Tybo Mining & Reduction Co. Letter, 1902.  The letter is written to P. A. Hjul of Eureka regarding shipment of merchandise and payment.  Tybo, which means “White Man” in Shoshone was brought to the attention of prospectors by a local Indian in 1870.  The District produced about $10 million in silver, lead, gold, mercury, antimony, barium, copper and zinc.  The letter is signed by John Lawton Butler, asst treasurer.  It is not clear if this Butler is related to the Tonopah hero of Jim Butler.  Small stain at left edge next to dateline.  Small tear at upper left corner near letterhead.  Penmanship is neat and clean.  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

1250.      Nye.  Tybo.  Tybo Weekly Sun, August 17, 1878.  The headline deals with the Nye County Muddle which is of a political nature.  There is also story about a how the writer would rather be a beggar and spend like a king than to be a king and spend like a beggar.  This story has a little more meat to it than just that.  Edges worn with many chips missing.  Paper is slightly acidified but the text is still bright.  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

1252.      Nye.  Unknown.  Mining photograph featuring four men near the open stopes of a “glory hole”.  This is probably a western Nevada terrain, much like that of the Montgomery Shoshone, pre-1980’s.  Current mining inactivity and the date piece suggests that the mining evidenced in the photo was prior to 1900.  Circa 1905, 4” x 6”, matte.  Xf.  Est. $50-100
