Document Collection, 1912-1915.  Lot of about 50 pcs.  Includes geologic reports, maps, correspondence, a ledger, articles of incorporation, annual reports, etc.  It appears that the company never got of the ground for it is not listed in any volume of the Mines Handbooks.  The 1915 President’s Report states that they own 15 claims located in the Mineral Mountains just east of Milford.  Great collection of a company that didn’t make it and all the documents to find out why or what went wrong.  This company is not listed in the Mines Handbooks.  Very fine.  Est. $250-500

1580.      Beaver.  Frisco.  Cactus Mining Co.  Incorporated in Utah.  Issued to bearer for 1 share, cert #130,358, in 1889.  Vignette at center of crude spread winged eagle with company attractively around vignette.  Black border on green paper with white underprint.  Uncancelled.  European certificate.  Cactus-Massachusetts-Copper Mines printed on certificate.  Also, Frisco, Utah printed on certificate.  All coupons attached.  There company is listed in Poole, 1898, p.754.  The company was based from Paris and was a gold and silver operation.  Very fine.  Est. $75-150

1581.      Beaver.  San Francisco.  Blackbird Copper-Gold MC, Ltd.  Cert.#110.  Incorporated in West VA.  Issued to R.H. Thompson for 650 shares in 1900.  Uncancelled.  Signed by president P.A. Franklin and secretary M. Gilbert.  Cute vignette of a black bird in masthead.  Black and gray print on white paper.  Printed by Courier Co.  Xf, two hole punches at left.  8 1/4” x 10 1/2”.  The company’s mine office was at Newhouse in Beaver County.  They owned the Bear mine in the Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, and was considered some of the best ground in the state with 2.5% copper and 50 cts gold for each percent copper.  They also owned 87 patented claims next to the Cactus Mine in the San Francisco district, Beaver County, Utah.  In 1912, the Utah properties looked very promising with new equipment ordered and in place for 1913 activity.  (Ref: Weed, 1912, p122.)  Est. $100-200

1582.      Beaver.  Star.  Cedar-Talisman Consolidated Mines Company.  Incorporated in Utah 1909.  Issued to D. Jenkinson for 1000 shares, cert #4293, in 1916.  Signed by S. S. Pond president and Geo Baglin secretary.  No vignette.  Black border.  Uncancelled.  Printer not noted.  5 x 9.  The company owned 13 claims in the Star district.  The ore was said to be 8% lead, 14% zinc and 7 ounces silver to the ton.  In 1915, electricity was installed to replace the steam engines.  The company charter was revoked in 1924.  (Mines Handbook, 1918, 1931, p.1346-1347).  Extremely fine.  Est. $25-75

L. C.  The company owned the Argetna, Homestake, Mahogany, Lexington, Champion, Black, Sentinel and Clipper Lode all within the Ashbrook district.  The lot includes a letter to the stockholders informing them that the officers have decided to sell their property to the Vipont MC.  This sale would also have the result of dissolving the company with stock options in the Vipont.  Vipont is listed as still in operation in 1918 (Mines Handbook, p.1388).  Fold creases.  Extremely fine.  Est. $150-200

1585.      Camp Douglas.  U. S. Cavalry Pay Voucher, 1865.  The pay voucher was for 1st Lt. Oscar Jewett, for the month of April, 1865, as Aide de Campe at Camp Douglas, Utah Territory.  It is confirmed and signed by Brigadier Gen. P. E. Conner.  By May 16th, Oscar Jewett and the General were present in St. Louis.  11 x 17.  Extremely fine.  Est. $100-300

1586.      General.  Concordia Mining Company.  Incorporated in Delaware 1899.  Issued to J. W. Calver Jr. for 5000 shares, cert #11, in 1899.  Signed by Geo. W. Merrill president and Martin Lippmann treasurer.  Vignette of a spread winged eagle with scale of justice in beak.  In orange and white underprint is a vignette that resembles an imprinted revenue.  The vignette has an Indian’s head with “Iroquois” within headdress.  Balck border and orange safety print.  One dollar adhesive revenue stamp affixed at right edge.  Uncancelled.  Printer not noted.  8 x 11.  We could find no information regarding this company within our library.  Fold creases.  Staple holes at upper left corner.  Extremely fine.  Est. $50-100

Williams.  Vignette at top of spread-winged bald eagle in foreground and Indian teepees and Indians on horseback in background on left, and steam train/industry scene in background on right.  Vignette at bottom of a young lady with a bonnet on.  Black border and print.  “Locations of Mines and Works, Grass Valley, Iron Co., Utah” printed on certificate.  Datelined New York.  Printer – ABN.  11 x 7.  Uncancelled.  XF. Antimony comes from the mineral Stibnite. This deposit was probably on Coyote Creek and was never successful. [Kemp in The Mineral Industry, 1892, edited by Rothwell] Early Antimony stocks are extremely rare.  This is officially a Utah Territory stock, since it is so designated. Est. $200-400

Roberts for 10,934 shares, cert #1648, in 1924.  Signed by L Bishop president and James C. Lynn treasurer.  Vignette at top center of three miners working underground.  Vignette at upper left of the Delaware State Seal.  Vignette at upper right of Utah State Symbol (beehive).  Orange border with black print.  Uncancelled.  Printer - Franklin Lee Division ABN.  9 x 12.  The company owned 89 claims in the Tusher Mountains within the Marysvale district.  They mined alunite to derive potash with a mill in Marysvale.  The mill was considered experimental and was leased out to other companies to also experiment with the milling purpose.  Florence was shipping their rare alunite ore to Detroit where 180 pounds of aluminum was extracted from every 1000 pounds of ore (Mines Handbook, 1925, p.1701).  Fold creases.  Extremely fine.  Est. $75-150

Wright Bank Note.  9 x 12.  The company was leasing the Bully Boy mine and had bought the Deseret and Dalton mines located within the Ohio district, Piute County near Marysvale.  The ore is of lead, copper, gold and silver in quartz.  The company was later bought out.  (Mines Handbook, 1925, p.1819).  Fold creases.  Tear at top and bottom edge at right fold crease.  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

Watney secretary.  Vignette in a circle of a large mill with two allegorical woman flanking the circle.  Green border  and underprint.  Uncancelled.  Printer - ABN.  8 x 12.  The company sold its property to the Wasatch Mining Co in 1913 for $160,00 which was to be distributed and then the company dissolve.  (Mines Handbook, 1912, p.248).  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

1595.      Salt Lake.  Alta.  Superior & Montana Mining Co.  Incorporated in Wyoming 1907.  Issued to Edward C. Des. Rochers for 100 shares, cert #1102.  Signed by Edward Ulseth president and M. M. Foley asst secretary.  Vignette of four miners working underground.  Orange border, seal and underprint.  Uncancelled.  Printer not noted.  8 x 11.  Under the company name is “Calumet, Michigan.”  A western mining company with its offices in Calumet backed by Michigan mining men.  Chas. Chynoweth was the vice president who also was involved as a director and/or and officer of several Michigan Mining Companies.  The Superior & Montana MV owned 90 acres known as the Columbus-Wedge group which had 100’ shaft in good ore.  The property was next to that of the Columbus Consolidated which was operating profitably extracting ore with 8% copper, 15% zinc and high gold and silver values.  By 1918, the Columbus Cons had purchased the property of the Superior & Montana.  (Mines Handbook, 1910, 1918).  Fold creases.  Very fine.  Est. $50-100

Stannard vice president, C. T. Ulrich treasurer and A. Gregory asst. transfer agent.  Vignette at top center of allegorical men in industrial pose.  Green border and underprint. Cancelled by hole punches of same along left edge.  9 x 12.  The history of Kennecott would consume too many pages for the details.  Kennecott is known for their Bingham Canyon property and being one of the leading copper producers in the 20th century.  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

By stamp and hole punch.  President’s and treasurer’s are printed.  Vignette of two allegorical figures seated against fancy molding setting.  Green border.  Printed by ABNC.  Fine, many hold punches.  8” x 12”.  The company acquired all of the Kenecott Mines and Beatson Copper Co. properties in 1915.  With a charter amending the ownership and operation of various mines in various parts of the country, the company continued to eat up various companies, including Braden Copper Co., the Utah Copper Co. and  the Alaska Development & Mineral Co., exemplary of its literal spread across the US.  (Ref: Rand Sturgis, 1931, pp.127-32).  Est. $25-50

1600.      Salt Lake.  Bingham.  Niagara MC.  Cert.#538.  Incorporated in Maine in 1911.  Issued to Treasurer of the Niagara MC (George Linxter) for 33 shares in 1938.  President’s signature is illegible.  Printed by Lowell.  8” x 11”.  Xf.  The United States Smelting Co., a subsidiary company of the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Co., owned 1690 shares in the Niagara MC by 1918.  The property consisted of several patented and unpatented mining claims adjoining mines of the U.S.S.R. & M. Co in Bingham.  The property was worked through the Niagara tunnel, which connects at its portal with the Bingham & Garfield RR for delivery of ores to the Salt Lake Valley smelters.  The property was a continuous producer.  Still operating in 1931.  (Ref: Mines Hdbk, 1918, p290; 1926, p145; 1931, p1908.)  Est. $25-50

Joseph Ray and sec.Ernest Mayer.  Vignette above masthead of underground mining scene; below masthead of spread-winged bald eagle with shield, star, arrows and wreath.  Black border and print, embossed seal.  Datelined New York.   Printer – S. 1603.      Salt Lake.  Bingham.  Utah Metal & Tunnel Company.  Incorporated in Maine 1914.  Issued to Richardson, Hill & Co for 10 shares, cert #5574, in 1920.  Signed by J. Rothwell vice president and W. H. Williams treasurer.  Vignette of a mining camp with much detail.  Brown border and underprint.  Uncancelled.  Printer. ABN.  8 x 12.  The company is a reorganization the Utah Metal M.  They owned 4000 acres that crossed from the Bingham district to the Tooele district in Tooele County.  In the 1920’s, a large bulk of the property was leased to the Utah Delaware MC.  There was a 450 ton mill.  The company had impressive ore productions with a peak year in 1915 with 9 million pounds of lead, 2.8 million pounds of copper, 16,000 ounces of gold and 475,000 ounces of silver.  In 1929, production were 3.6 million pounds of lead, 365,000 pounds of copper, 2,500 ounces of gold and 115,000 ounces of silver.  The future for the company looked bright in 1930.  (Mines Handbook, 1931, p.1915-1917)  Fold creases.  Some wrinkling along edges.  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

Lewis.  One is dated 1881 and is for “…survey of Helena Lode Mining claim, Steath Mining District, Idaho.  The other, dated 1884, is for “…survey of Eureka No 2 Placer Mining claim, Warm Springs Creek District, Idaho.  Black print and borders on crème paper.  No printer noted.  4 x 7.  Both indicate deposits of $30.  Very fine.  Est. $100-200
1607.      Salt Lake.  Salt Lake.  Oregon Short Line Railroad Co Checks, 1911-12.  Lot of 3 pcs.  The Oregon Short Line RR was incorporated in Utah 1897.  In 1913, the company acquired the Idaho Northern Ry and in 1914, the Central Idaho RR, Salt Lake & Idaho RR, Payette Extension RR and which all later merged.  In 1899, the Union Pacific bought up the stock, thus acquiring the company and controls the entire system (Moody’s, 1922, p. 202)  Very fine.  Est. $25-50

Elmer Barrett for 100 shares in 1955.  Printed signatures.  Vignette of bald eagle perched atop globe.  Green border.  Printed by Goes.  Xf.  8 1/2” x 11”.  Hole punches at left.  The company held interest in several properties ranging from Elko Co., Nevada, all over Utah and Lincoln Co., Wyoming.  Several consisted of gold-copper production.  (Ref: Mines Register, 1956, p.430).  Est. $10-25

1611.      Salt Lake.  West Jordan.  Utah & Salt Lake Canal Company.  Incorporated in Utah 1880.  Issued to Andrew Peter Neilson for 7 shares, cert #1103 A, in 1890.  Vignette at top center of a man with horses pulling a plow and a woman next to hay stacks.  Dark blue border and print.  Cancelled by rubber stamp of same.  5 x 10.  Operating in West Jordan Irrigation District, Salt Lake County, Utah” printed on certificate.  Fold creases.  Extremely fine.  Est. $50-100

1612.      Salt Lake.  West Mountain (Bingham).  Utah-Delaware MC Corporate Seal.  Inc. in DE, 1924.  The company’s corporate office was in New York and the mine office was in Bingham Canyon.  This company was the successor to the Utah Consolidated MC which had gone bankrupt.  The property and assets were being purchased or taken over by the Anaconda and its subsidiaries to cover indebtedness.  They owned the Highland Boy group with 46 patented claims on 393 acres, the Bingham Copper Boy group with 13 patented claims on 143 acres and the Yampa mine with 51 acres.  The properties form one contiguous block in West Mountain (Bingham) district, Salt Lake County.  In 1926 they entered into an agreement with Utah Metal and Tunnel for a 5 year lease with a 5 year extension.  (Ref: Mines Hdbk, p1547, 1549).  The seal is approx. 6 x 10, manufactured by Broun-Green, NY.  Simple seal with no graphics.  Est. $50-100

SUMMIT

 

1613.      Summit.  Uintah MC.  Inc. in Utah Terr., 1880.  Cert #3217, issued to H.A. Van Prag, Trustee for 100 shares in 1880.  Signed by pres. J. Danzig and sec. F.K. Lockner.  Vignette at top fo three miners inspecting a rock.  Small vignette at bottom of an Indian in a canoe.  Black border.  Printer – Hosford & Sons, NY.  11 x 8.  Uncancelled.  Crisp, XF.  The Uintah was in Summit County where the largest bullion producer was the Ontario mine.  The company employed 12 men in 1882-83, driving two drifts, but were unsuccessful in finding paying ore.  (Ref: Report of the Dir. 1615.      Tooele.  Tooele, Utah Real Photopostcard, 1909.  The scene is of the Office Tooele Improvement Co building with caption at bottom of card stating “13-Town Lot Sale-Tooele, Utah-Apr. 15-09”.  There is a note on back but it was never mailed.  The content implies that W L J, the writer, was at the land sale and was telling his friends that he wishes they had been there to make good money quick.  Maggie bought 3 lots for $249 and he was offered $1000 for them yesterday.  Extremely fine.  Est. $25-50

Lasserly.  Green border and print.  Wonderful vignette of two naked cherubs battling each other with coins as shields.  Printer – ABN.  Datelined Salt Lake City.  “Harrisburg District. Washington Co., Utah” printed along bottom border.  This is a famous certificate because of the coins (sealed dollars) in the vignette.  The Stormont was a major producer at Silver Reef.  In 1884, with a neighboring mine, they produced 234,000 ounces of bullion.  They claimed to recover 80% in their mill.  (Ref: Burchard, 1885, p430.)  Uncancelled.  10 1/2 x 7 1/2.  XF.  Est. $100-200

1622.      Hot Springs.  Collins.  Two letters written by George Watterman, 1902.  Written on Downing Investment Co letterhead that has a vignette of their building at upper left.  The first letter is four (4) pages, double sided, and notes Watterman’s frustrations of a mining superintendent upon the financier and his men that periodically check the mine.  The second letter discusses the mine and local way of life.  Both have very colorful content.  Extremely fine.  Est. $100-200
