FINE ART J. Howard Martin, The Prospector Painter. 1853-1919 James. Howard Martin is known by some as the quintessential Nevada desert artist. “J. H. Martin roamed the desert and hills of Nevada prospecting and painting the scenes of his wanderings. There was poetic appeal to his lyrical type of painting which interpreted so well the tone of the desert, and the scenes which he painted at the time came to grace a number of Nevada homes.” (Undated copy of article in the Lane Family collection from the Reno Gazette, circa 1915-19.) Martin once studied in Europe with Corot, among others. He taught art in Denver, then moved to Reno where he had a small office and studio in the downtown area. He described by some as old and crotchety. “At times fortune smiled on him and he sold a large number of his paintings. The money thus obtained, he put into mines and finally lost all.” J. H. Martin shot himself to death at 7am on July 15 or16, 1919 in his studio. [There are conflicting reports of the date of death.] He was “penniless and half starved,” and died without a will. His estate was appraised at $5462 for 100 paintings. He had no next of kin and the state made a move to obtain the paintings. At the time of his death, a painting called the Village Blacksmiths was deemed the most valuable, appraised at $700. A Death Valley scene was appraised at $400. (8/14/1919 Reno Gazette) “Martin had been a character around Reno for the last ten years and earned a precarious living painting western scenes. His pictures of Death Valley, Lake Tahoe, and the deserts of Nevada, cattle and range scenes can be seen in many Reno homes and in his prime he had an enviable reputation for that kind of work ranking with Remington, according to art critics.”… “ He was also known as the Prospector Painter”,… “spending his summers prospecting and wandering Nevada’s Hills.” 7/16/19 Reno Evening Gazette. One of the newspaper articles discussed the fact that Martin died intestate and that the State was trying to obtain the nearly 100 paintings present at the time of death. It has long been surmised by collectors that the State did take these paintings through the escheating process, and that they had not since surfaced in any displays or exhibits. However, according to State records, by State law when the estate was escheated, the State could not simply take the paintings. Law dictated that the items be sold at auction. Thus J. Sessions, the Public Administrator, sold all the paintings, completing the sale by August 10, 1919. It was from this sale that the Martin paintings and watercolors were obtained for the Lane Family Collection which contains about half of the reported original group, most of which is offered here in this sale. [with help from Jeff Kintop, Nevada State Archives; Eric Moody, Nevada Historical Society and the Nevada Art Research project, courtesy Jim McCormick] J. LaVerne Lane LaVerne Lane was a classical modern Impressionist who studied engraving and painting at the Cleveland Art Institute circa 1928-1932. Several paintings were commissioned in Ohio and still hang there today. A few portraits were commissioned in Nevada, but for the most part, Lane did not sell his work. Lane’s touches with the brush created oils in the classic Impressionist style. In particular, some artists have compared him with Edgar Payne, John Frost, Maurice Brown and others who so gracefully painted western (mostly California) landscapes. In 1928 he married Mildred Byers Lane, an artist in her own right, and also the daughter of James Byers, an early Nevada mining camp minister, who established the first Presbyterian Church in Goldfield in 1905. The family later moved to Lamoille, where Byers built a church. When LaVerne and Mildred moved to Reno in the late 1920’s, he started the Nevada Engraving Company on Fourth Street and about this time became interested in photography. He was hired by several outfits to shoot his specialty: Nevada landscape. He also painted advertisements. He began painting western scenes immediately. His work was particularly well received, and in 1933 he sold some outstanding works in Akron, Ohio, perhaps at a one man show. Two of the photos here show some of his best work hanging on walls in Akron in 1933.Somewhere along the line, Lane took up photography. He worked with Fred Howard, a Nevada artist who died only this year. One of Lane’s best friends, though, was Hans Meyer-Kassel. The Lanes and Meyer-Kassel painted together for years, with favorite spots in Washoe Valley and Genoa. Meyer-Kassel regularly sent the Lanes Christmas cards, each a special artistic creation . The Lanes themselves enjoyed the Lamoille area, painting there for many years, as well as the region surrounding Reno. LaVerne’s favorite medium was oil on canvas. Many of Lane’s fine photographs are present in this sale. His special touch and command of composition is evident in his photos. LaVerne’s brother Harold was an artist in Arizona. Both were influenced by their father, Julius Eugene Lane who was an artist and musician. LaVerne never had a gallery or sold his paintings in Nevada. He was commissioned to paint some great works in Akron, and may have had a show there. But once in Nevada, the paintings were his, and stayed home except for the occasional commissioned portrait. He quit when he first had some heart trouble. Only family and friends, such as Meyer-Kassel, have seen his work until now. Mildred Lane Mildred Lane was also an accomplished artist. Her favorite medium was watercolor. Local art enthusiasts know her work well. She painted scenes in Virginia City, Washoe Valley, and generally all around north western Nevada. Her touch with pastel tones of Nevada landscapes draws the eye of any nature lover. She was always an admirer of her husband’s work. While she did not have the classical training of LaVerne, she nonetheless studied with most of the painters of her day including Craig Sheppard, Tony Crouch, and Jack Shields. She exhibited with the 20th Century Club, Latimer Club, Reno Art and Flower Show, Nevada National Bank, Nevada State Fair, Elko, etc. Lane confessed to not having the patience for oils. She felt that water colors were light and flowing, a feeling that she wanted in her work. The immediateness of a watercolor also excited her over the slower production of an oil painting. She was first taught as a girl by both her mother and grandmother, who painted china. Jesse Byers, her mother, had an exciting life as the wife of a mining camp minister. Her story was told in a biography we published in our June, 2002 catalog. Her grandmother, Emma Greenlee, lived in Sumpter, Oregon. Mildred participated in a huge number of shows. She and her watercolors would appear whenever asked. She has sold to the State of Nevada, and to dozens of local art collectors from Elko to Reno. The Collection We are honored to present this collection of fine art. The following paintings represent a portion of those given to Fred Holabird Americana for sale directly from the Lane family. A portion of their paintings have also been kindly donated to the University of Nevada Special Collections Library, whose Western Art collection will be on public exhibition at a new facility within a few years. 1075.
