California, Jackson

The following lots are from a discovery in Jackson, California, made about 1900. The family does not remember the mine name, nor do they have any remaining photographs. The weathered, fractured piece with native gold is thought to be, and is typical of, a miner’s discovery piece. The miner who discovered this vein kept this as a souvenir. At some point, thought to be in the late 1950’s to early 1960’s, the family thought about selling the specimens, but never sold any. Many have been mounted in small plastic boxes, though no formal conservation of the specimens has ever taken place. A few small slabs of high grade jewelry rock appear to have been taken from one specimen. Though the discovery was made about 100 years ago, this still represents a virgin find to collectors.

Nevada, Round Mountain

Round Mountain crystallized gold. These gold specimens are among the finest material to come from Round Mountain. This group is notable for its fine crystal form and brightness. This gold is usually 70% gold and 30% silver, also known as a form of electrum.

1071. Minerals. Calcite Crystalline Specimen. A very attractive dog’s tooth calcite specimen, 9 tall, 13 long and 9 wide. Original country rock at one side. This type of calcite growth would have to have been within a open space. Minor damage to some of the taller spires from improper handling. Calcite is a very soft mineral and can be easily chipped, abraded and broken. Great piece for a display cabinet. About 20 pounds. Very fine. Est. $250-500 abe Lincoln guy

The nine different specimens include: Silver Ore from the Con Virginia, Belcher, Ophir, Crown Point, Gould & Curry, Yellow Jacket, Mexican and Hale & Norcross and one Quartz crystal specimen from the Chollar. All specimens are about 3 long x 2 wide x 1 high. Extremely fine. Extremely rare. These specimens all came from the Crystal BAr collection, one of the few original collections of high grade Comstock ores collected during the big Bonanza boom. For over 100 years the specimens sat behind glass. Our consignor acquired them when the saloon closed and split them up into the boxes in this sale, and in our summer sale this year.
