The fire was in Portland, and the victim was David Campbell, one of Portland’s early chiefs. He died attempting to rescue other firemen. A memorial to his memory was erected at 19th and Burnside. Xf. Poor’s, 1882, lists this spur of the Denver & Rio Grande as running between Salt Lake City in the Territory of Utah and t the boundary line of Colorado, “275 miles. Gauge, 3 ft. Rail (steel), 30 lbs. to the yard.” As of July 1, 1882 the company had “150 miles of completed line south from Salt Lake City, acquired by the purchase of the Utah and Pleasant Valley Railroad and the Wasatch and Jordan Valley RR...” There were plans to create a junction with the Denver and Rio Grande Ry.
