163. California. Book. Gold Rush. Miner's Guide & Metallurgist's Directory, 1849 by J. W. Orton. Published by A. S. Barnes & Co, Cincinnati. The name Robert Murray is written on one of the inside pages. Robert Murray was an assistant surgeon with Company B of the California Volunteers, coming west in 1846. There is a vignette of a placer gold mining scene below the title. 86pps plus 10 pps of advertising in the back. Geologic cross sections face the title page. 4 x 6 , gilt lettering on spine: The Miner's Guide , brown cloth with floral designs. Dark discoloration along top edge and a lower right corner, the latter penetrating through entire work. Wear to front lower right wear board material. The book states in the preface that is intended for those without a large library , and to be an indispensable companion to enable the miner to assay, extract 26;the useful metals. The basis of the book is a discussion of the metals and their properties, with methodology of identification. Orton describes the assay process with the old terminology docimastic art. He discusses quicksilver amalgamation in detail and other sound, and clearly written advice. But there is insufficient detail from which to render quantitative assays for gold ores containing silver; thus, the miner would get incorrect higher assays for gold using the methods described in this book. For the general gold ores found in most of the Mother Lode region of California, this methodology would be adequate, though nowhere near as accurate as it could be. This clearly a book intended for California miners - an attempt to educate them about metals and to some degree about geology. Unlike some other similar works of this period, Orton knows his subject matter very well and has illustrated important points in carefully flowing language that makes sense (granted that this description here is written by a mining geologist, it might otherwise be undecipherable to others). While Orton has used the term directory here is with regard to a directory of metals, through Orton did not use these terms. No mention is made of California by name. This book was Orton's first work, according to the family history. In 1879, he was appointed Professor of Natural History at Vassar College. James Orton also wrote Underground Tr4easures several years later, a book highlighting some of the fascinating aspects of geology. (ref: An Account of the Descendants of Thomas Orton of Windsor, CT, be Ed Orton, Professor of Geology, Ohio State College, 1896). This book came with a large collection of gold rush maps and diaries from Forest Hill. It is not listed Howes, Kurutz, Graff nor Streeter and has no auction sales history, though we had another copy several years ago, which is now in an institutional collection. Only two copies were located, that of the Minnesota Historical Society and the California State Library. No in NUC, RLIN nor COPAC. We believe it is an essential tool for the educated man who came to California as a 49'er. Its tie to San Francisco and Auburn make it a classic Gold Rush era book. This is a lot from Auction #13 that was never paid for. Not a new discovery piece. Extremely Rare. Est. $3500-7000

Clark sold out to Edward Washburn, John Washburn, and Henry Washburn in 1874—Henry's wife renamed the place Wawona. A Post Office was established at Clark's Station in 1878, changing the name too Wawona in 1883, and discontinued it in 1935. The Wawona supposedly is from an Indian term meaning A Big Tree but A. L. 219. California. Mono. Bodie. A.I.M.E. Bodie Miners Union Ribbon, c.1882. Blue ribbon, gold printing, topped by a 1 gold colored metal pin holder with eagle design. One the light blue ribbon, in gilt lettering Miners / Union / Bodie, Cal / American / Institute / of / Mining Engineers / 1876. / Member. Measures 5 length by 2 3/8 wide. American Institute of Mining Engineers formed in 1871 by America's top geologist: Ross Raymond, W. P. Blake, G. Maynard, R. Pumpelly, etc. In 1876, Bodie was reported to have about 20-24 people, plenty enough to form a miner's union, especially with financing slowly beginning to funnel into the (see image next page.) town. In the fall of that same year, a couple of prospectors sold claims to Bill Lent, a San Francisco lawyer and Comstock millionaire, who incorporated a new company in April 1877 - The Standard Gold Mining Co. By 1878, the Bodie Miner's Union had constructed a hall. The first western AIME conference was held in Denver, 1882. A delegate from the Bodie Miner's Union most likely attended, wearing this ribbon. This ribbon is probably a one of a kind, as the delegate probably had to purchase the badge from his own pocket. Extremely rare. Extremely fine. Est. $500-1000

220. California. Mono. Bodie. Bodie & Benton Railway & Commercial Co. Cert #57. Incorporated in California. $1000 Bond issued in 1886. Signed by Montgomery Howe president and Wilson B. Morse secretary. Fabulous vignette of a steam train next to a saw mill with oxen pulling in large logs all set in a small valley with a mountainous backdrop. Signed by H. M. Yerington as president. Signatures slightly obscured by cancellation hole punches. Black border and print. Cancelled by hole punches near bottom. Printer - Britton & Rey, SF. 15 x 16 . 4 of the original 10 coupons have been cashed in. The line ran from Bodie to Mono Mills and had branches to the Woodward and Standard Mine. (Various Internet Sites). This company was taken over and renamed the Cons Piedmont Cable Co which planned to convert the 14th St horse drawn line to electric. Later, the Cons Piedmont was itself reorganized as the Piedmont and Mountain View Railway. (Source, various internet sites). As is our policy of full disclosure, we were sent eleven of these extremely rare, previously unknown Bodie bonds by the consignor. We are fortunate to have been chosen to sell the bonds. Instead of auctioning one and getting a record high price, we felt it was most appropriate to place a fair retail price on these bonds and sell them individually, giving everyone a fair chance at acquisition. Based on comparative rarity for Bodie and desirable western mining camp railroad pieces the price is $950 per bond on a first come basis. My thought process for the price is as follows: there are about 15 of the Empire bonds (related to the Bodie Bluff stocks) known from 1864, all selling for $1000 or more today; the Bodie Bluff stocks signed by Leland Stanford with more than 25 known generally selling for $1000 up each; Virginia & Truckee Railroad bonds generally sell for $600 each in very fine condition with more than 100 known in collections. Extremely fine. $950 each

221. California. Mono. Bodie. Bodie Bluffs Cons Mining Co. No cert #. Incorporated in California. Unissued. Signed by Leland Stanford. Beautiful yellow and pink background (underprint). Spectacular vignette of Bodie Hill with eleven of the original properties attributed on the hill. Uncancelled. Printer - Agnew & Deffbach, SF. Datelined Aurora, Mono Co, Cal. At the time of this certificate would have been issued, it was thought that Aurora was located in California. A detailed survey soon found that Aurora was actually in Esmeralda County. Mono then lost out on the revenue taxes from the Aurora mines. Stanford invested in Bodie unsuccessfully in the early 1860's. He sold out before the big discoveries were made and never profited from the Bodie bonanza. Stanford went on to a great career as a financier, primarily for the Central Pacific RR. He began a university named for his son, Stanford University. These certificates are extremely rare signed, and only 2 are known that are actually issued. Extremely fine. Est. $750-1500

Signed by O. H. Piase(?). 1C18 in blue print at lower left. This rare western stagecoach pass is probably for a line that was a result of the failed effort of some men to build a railroad from Oakland to Bodie via Stockton. The California and Nevada Railroad formed in 1881 and surveyed that year. It proposed crossing five mountain passes en route to Bodie through Nevada. It never was built. The stage line did operate for a few years. [Loose, Bodie Bonanza, p193] Est. $1000-2000

231. California. Mono. Bridgeport. Early Bridgeport Legal Documents, 1874-1877. Lot of 5 different documents. (1) Real Estate Deed, for a lot in Bridgeport, Mono County, recorded July 3rd, 1877. Deed is standard legal size (8 ½ x 14 ) and was executed for property belonging to Sidney Huntoon being sold to Chas E. Loose and William Ryan for $2500.00. Deed has been recorded and notarized and has the fancy red Mono County Court Seal. In great condition. An early Bridgeport document when Bridgeport first became a town. (2) Chattel Mortgage Recorded and Notarized in Bridgeport, Mono County on Nov 2, 1874 for a $150.00 loan to a Samuel Silliman from J.B. Tinkum and J.W. Towle. Silliman is providing collateral consisting of a $100 promissory note owed him by Bechtel & Co. (originally of Aurora )and some personal items (one horse and buckboard, one single harness, and one due bill owed him of $80.00 from J.D. Patterson) in exchange for a $150.00 loan from Tinkum and Towle, all due and payable on or before the first day of November 1875. It looks like Silliman is offering about $250.00 worth of non-liquid goods for a quick loan of $150.00 to probably get out of debt or buy into a promising claim or something. An nice early and interesting piece of Bridgeport & Mono County history on legal size (8 ½ x 14 ) paper with the Mono County fancy red Notary Seal and recording information. Included with this is a short promissory note that specifies the specific terms (interest and term of loan) – for some reason this information was not included in the original Chattel Mortgage papers and so this note was drawn up. (3) Power of Attorney Recorded and Notarized in Bridgeport, Mono County on Nov 2, 1874 from Samuel Silliman to J.W. Towle. This relates to the Chattel Mortgage in 8. above wherein Silliman is transferring his legal right to collect the $100.00 promissory note owed him by Bechtel & Co. and pledged as collateral in the Chattel Mortgage to one of the Mortgagees J.W. Towle. An nice early and interesting piece of Bridgeport & Mono County history on legal size (8 ½ x 14 ) paper with the Mono County fancy red Notary Seal and recording information. (4) Power of Attorney from Recorded and Notarized in Bridgeport, Mono County on Oct 28, 1874 from Samuel Silliman to J. W. Towle. This again relates to the Chattel Mortgage, wherein Silliman is transferring his legal right to seek, recover, and take possession of the Horse pledged in the Chattel Mortgage. This horse was apparently roaming around on the range near the Bechtel and Stark Mill (Mill located in either in Aurora or Bodie). An nice early and interesting piece of Bridgeport Mono County history

on legal size (8 ½ x 14 ) paper with the Mono County fancy red Notary Seal and recording information. (5) Mortgage Recorded and Notarized in Bridgeport, Mono County on Nov 17, 1875 from J. E. Obenchain to John W. Stewart for a piece of property (160 acres) situated near the settlement of Bridgeport. Mortgage is for $500.00 and the terms are just 1 ½% interest per month from date until paid . Obenchain is really cutting Stewart some slack, as it appears there is neither fixed monthly payment amount nor no maturation date of the mortgage! Boy is that a deal – 160 acres in beautiful Big Meadows (Bridgeport Valley) for just $3.00 per acre and pay it back whenever you can. It produced about $650,000 in gold through 1881, according to Burchard. L. L. Homer discovered the district in August, 1879.
