The stereocard shows an Indian mother and child identified on reverse as ;Navajo Indian squaw and child at their home, in Canon de Chelle. On the front left is ;Expedition of 1873 and at right is ;1st Lieut. Geo M. Wheeler, Corp of Engineers Commanding. On reverse is ;War Department, Corps of Engineers, U.S.A. Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian. T. H. O'sullivan, Photo. No. 27. One of the West's top two photographers, O'sullivan captured the west in its infant state of development. He traveled with the Wheeler Expedition and was the official photographer. This photo is one of the most important Indian sites in the southwest. Some staining at left, very publishable. Date 1873. Very fine. Est. $150-300

Signed by Henry Izard president and A. E. Sanders secretary. Vignette of two miners working underground. Green border and unique, attractive green underprint. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 8 x 10. Datelined Denver, Colo. Owned 60 acres in the Bear Mountain district, about 8 miles from Silver City. ;Claimed to have old workings, and said to be reopening by a tunnel claimed to show auriferous and argentiferous copper ore of good assay value. This is one of the promotions of the Financial Security & Trust Co, of Denver, and probably is absolutely fraudulent, as this same company was the promoter of the Spanish Lost Bullion Mines, Geronimo Copper MC and Pizarro Copper MC, all of which claimed to have old Spanish workings. The Spanish Lost Bullion was proven in court to be an outright swindle, and presumably other promotions of the company are no better. (Copper Handbook, 1908, p.881). Very fine. Est. $100-200

Jackson, General Manager, Sierra City, NM, dated June 28, 1882. 7 3/4 x 9 3/4. Lower quarter of letter appears to have met liquid at one time which has resulted in slight bleeding of copy— otherwise very clean and legible, VF. Est. $75-150

822. New Mexico. Sante Fe. Dolores. New Mexico Mining Co. Cert #605. Incorporated in Territory of New Mexico. Issued to David H. Gildersleeve for 123 shares in 1868. Signed by Jno Kidwell president and F. W. Jones secretary. Attractive vignette of several miners in forest setting with two sluice boxes and one rocker, picking and shoveling gravel into the boxes and rocker. Black border. Uncancelled. Printer - Philip & Solomons, Washington D.C. 7 x 10. Datelined Washington, D. C. Mines included the Ortiz mine located about a mile from Dolores. The famous Ortiz gold quartz claim was discovered in 1833 on the property of Jose Francisco Ortiz. Hand sorted ore was crushed in arrastras and gold was amalgamated with mercury. By 1869, a tramway had been built from the shaft to the 40 stamp mill. This stamp mill was the first erected in New Mexico. Unfortunately the operation was not very profitable was shut down in the early 1880's. From 1833 to 1910, the Ortiz mine is estimated to have produced $2 million in gold. In 1900, Thomas Edison used the Ortiz mine to try out his prototype gold separating machine. It failed. Discoloration along left edge due to glue from stub, which is no longer attached. Very fine. 825. Oregon. Douglas. Roseburg. Lucky Queen Gold & Silver Mining Co. Cert. #761. Inc. Jan. 18, 1876. Issued to J. B. Noble, March 22, 1877, 500 shares. Signed by Wm. R. Willis, President and W. T. Bodley, Secretary. Vignette encompassing entire left end of certificate shows woman carrying sheaves of wheat and scythe. Vignette at top center showing miners and ore car at mouth of tunnel. Dog head vignette between signatures. Very thin paper, black print, with title in pink. ;Roseburg and ;Oregon printed. Uncancelled. Printer: E.M. Waite. 5 1/2 x 10. A true producer, the Lucky Queen was primarily a lode gold mine which eventually claimed 1,500’ of underground workings. Located at the junction of Jumpoff Joe and Shorthorn creeks, the company built a reduction mill nearby in 1886. Production is unreported, and the site is today abandoned. [Ref: McDonald, p. 18]. Condition: very minor browning in places. Est. $200-400

826. Oregon. General. Oregon Newspapers, 1876-81. Includes 9 issues of several Oregon papers. The first is ;The Democratic Times from Jacksonville dated January 28, 1876 (16 x 22 1/2). There are 2 issues of the ;Salem Daily Record dated February 2 and 3, 1875 (13 1/2 x 20). Two issues of ;The Daily Bulletin from Portland dated February 20 and 21, 1873 (17 3/4 x 24). One issue of ;The Weekly Standard from Portland on January 28, 1881 (15 3/4 x 22). One issue of ;Morning Oregonian from Portland dated Aug. 9, 1878 (17 1/2 x 23 1/2). One issue of ;The Coos Bay News from Marshfield on July 27, 1887 (18 x 24) and one issue of ;State Rights Democrat out of Albany dated June 15, 1877 (20 x 27). Three of these bear the ;L.P. Fisher's Advertising Agency stamp from San Francisco. All are folded, with wear and tear mostly to folds and edges. A couple have heavy staining, others some foxing and minor dirt. Papers largely have a high acid content with resultant browning around edges. Fine. Not all are pictured here. Est. $100-200

Glass framed handbill, partially torn creases, foxing, tears in upper left and lower right corners, wood block type faces. ;Rev. J.W. Conkrite, will lecture on the subject of the Prophicies and Present Cricis (sic)! At the Court House, Friday evening, Sept. 4th at 6 o’clock. Admission Free! Come One! Come All! Note attached to glass reads, ;This handbill was found underneath Jacksonville's Beekman Bank. The lecture was given in the Jackson County Courthouse on September 4, 1886. Rev. Conkrite was a circuit riding minister. In 1888, he was killed by renegade Apaches in Arizona. Torn at middle. Bottom trimmed tight. 829. Oregon. Multnomah. Portland. Oregon & California Rail Road Co Check, 1870. Check #24. Issued to Geo W. Wigler for $300. Company title at top. Vignette at left edge of a steam engine. Datelined Portland, O. Imprinted RN-B16 revenue. Signed by B. M .Holladay. Ben Holladay was the founder of Holladay Overland Express. For ten years, this company was the mail and express carrier linking the Pacific with the interior western frontier states, such as Idaho, Eastern Washington, etc. Holladay signs this check as president. The California & Oregon RR was organized in 1870, the year this check was issued, and had the rail line opened by 1872. The company took over the land grant of the defunct Oregon Central RR. The line ran from Portland to Corvallis. A very early autograph check. Extremely fine. Est. $100-300

Owned the Zemora mine at the head of Carr Fork with ore that ran 6% copper, 22% lead, 12% zinc, 8 ounces silver and varying amounts of gold per ton. There was an aerial tram from the tunnel to the loading bins along the Copper Belt rail line. By 1908, the mine had produced about $500,000 in ore. (Copper Handbook, 1908, p.373-74). Extremely fine. All are folded, faded with small dings or tears at folds or along edges, fine to VF. Incorporated in October of 1888 in Utah. Wolstenholm for 5 shares on June 17, 1907. Signed by president P.C. Kittle and secretary A. McFarland. Matted and framed, entire piece is 13 1/4 x 9. Cancelled in red pen at an angle across center. White paper with black print, border and artwork. Safety print and embossed seal in gilt gold. Has been folded and has minor stains and foxing. Handsomely matted and framed. Buyer should replace the cardboard backing with archival quality cardboard or similar material. VF. The second piece in this lot is the Western Fuel Company Corporate Seal. 5 1/2 x 9 3/4. VF. 851. Utah. Summit. Ontario Silver Mining Co Annual Report, 1892. 26 pages of text and 9 fold out colored mine diagrams at the center. The directors of the company include some of the best known mining men of the west: L. T. Haggin, Lloyd Tevis, J. B. Haggin, W. B. Carr and others. The report details the individual shafts and levels associated with each of the three shafts. Fabulous fold cross sections of the mine. Report is 8 x 10. This is the company that made George Hearst his second million, after losing his first. This mine was extensive, beginning in the late 1870's and lasting through at least the turn of the century. In 1884, the mine employed 450 men, used 15,000 tons of coal and over 400,000 board feet of timber. The business team that developed at this mine led to the Butte boom. One of the mine managers at the Ontario was Marcus Daly. Daly earned the trust and respect of Hearst, Tevis and Haggin which allowed for these three men to concentrate on the development of the copper deposits of Butte. A fabulous piece of mining history. Some water staining and soiling on front cover. Cross sections extremely fine. Est. $200-400

855. Wyoming. Uinta. Ft. Bridger. Mary & Judge Carter Repro Photos & M. G. Carter Check, Framed, 1889. The bank draft on Mary Carter, dated Dec. 7, 1889, for $75, is signed boldly by Mary Carter. The repro photos are of Mary Carter and Judge Carter with small brass plaques beneath. Framed in wood, with photos and check under glass in separate matted openings. 18 x 23 overall. Judge Carter was an early settler in the Wyoming Territory is well known to historical researchers of Wyoming. He owned the trading post at Fort Bridger. He died in 1881, and his wife took over the business, running for another 20 years. A brave endeavor for a widow in the western frontier. Extremely fine. Est. $300-500
