Datelined Utica. John Butterfield was the unsung partner of Wells and Fargo. In 1850, Butterfield convinced Henry Wells and William Fargo to consolidate Butterfield and Wasson with that of Wells, Fargo to form American Express, the same as that of today. The break between Butterfield and Wells and Fargo came in 1852-53, when the board of American Express show that already $60 million in gold had reached the East Coast, and American Express was missing out on that transportation. Butterfield vetoed the idea of expanding American Express to the West Coast, most likely believing that the gold rush was only short lived. Wells, Fargo & Co formed, and the rest is history. John Butterfield is better remembered for the Butterfield Overland Stage Co, formed in 1857 to bid on the lucrative $600,000 government contract to carry mail from the East Coast to San Francisco. Butterfield's bid won, but only after the Postmaster General required that the cross country route travel through Arkansas, El Paso, Texas to Fort Yuma, AZ, and on to San Francisco, forcing the mail route through the desert southwest. The mines of Colorado and Nevada were in their infancy or not yet discovered. Butterfield won the contract and on Sept 16, 1858, Butterfield himself left the St. Louis post office with 2 bags of mail and one passenger, Waterman L. Ormsby. Ormsby stayed with the trip all the way to San Francisco, which took 24 days for the 2,812 miles. Ormsby's quote when he arrived was ;Had I not just come out over the route, I would be perfectly willing to go back, but I now know what Hell is like. I'sve just had 24 days of it. The Overland Stage Co continued its service for the next 2.5 years profitably, but in 1860, Butterfield was forced out. Wells, Fargo & Co took over, due to the large debts owed those men by Butterfield. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the last Overland Stage trip through the desert southwest was made March 21, 1861, essentially marking the end of the Butterfield Overland Stage Co. Wells, Fargo & Co used more northerly routes, traveling into the core of American history. John Butterfield died at his home in Utica, New York, in 1869.
