934. Western. General. Pacific Coast Steam Ship Co. China, c.1895-1905. Lot of 2. This lot contains two pieces of steam ship dining saloon china from the Pacific Coast Steam Ship Company which operated from 1876-1916. The pattern on these two pieces, an oval platter and a demitasse, is representative of a pattern used by the line between 1895 and 1905. Both pieces are white vitrified Acme china with two thin lines of green around circumference and the conjoined monograms of the company name, P.C.S.S.Co. Demitasse measures 2 1/2 across by 2 1/2 tall. It has a couple of tiny chips on its underside base rim from standard wear. The oval platter measures 8 x 5 3/4, it has a couple of minor stains at the rim and inside neck of the platter, also a couple on the bottom— out of ordinary sight. There are also some minor age striations along underside. Research done by the consignor indicates that the monogram pattern seen here is the first known top marked dining saloon china of the company. It is the product of Wood & Sons of England, distributed by the Anglo-American Crockery & Glass Company of San Francisco. There were three other known top-marked patterns of china that followed this monogrammed set. Even after such changes, this older patterns was used on at least one of the company'ss veteran steam ships as late as 1913. The famous P.C.S.S.Co. had its origins with the pioneer steam ship line of Goodall, Nelson & Perkins (1867) and operated routes from Alaska to Mexico. It merged into the Admiral Line in 1916. Dr. Frederick H. Pough Collection.

The following pots are all from the Fred Pough Collection. Dr. Pough is a world-renowned mineralogist. Dr. Pough is a Harvard graduate, and former curator for gems and minerals at the New York American Museum of Natural History in the 1940'ss. Dr. Pough has been a Reno resident for decades, now in his nineties. Probably all of you geologists grew up on his Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals first published by Hougton-Mifflin in 1953. My own copy of this book is heavily used, but not too badly tattered and torn. Dr. Pough authored many other books, generally on mineralogical subjects, though he has a deep love of flora as well. Fred said he collected the Casa Grande pots while living in Tucson (circa 1940, date uncertain), obtaining them from a collector who collected them about 1920. The Mexican pots came from an auction in Santa Barbara December 17, 1968 entitled ;pre-Columbian Art Sale. Fred retained the rough mimeographed copy of the auction catalogs but they did not have the gallery name on them. None of the pots had specific location identity, but Fred suspects the Valley of Mexico near and around Mexico City. Fred has an affinity for this area since doing some mineralogical and archeological work there and for his work in a movie filmed there about 1942-1949 called Parikutin. During this work, Fred collected the figurines and necklace parts from the mud in the lakebed. The necklace beads were found a bead at a time and Fred assembled them as he felt the piece might have looked.

In 1896, Frenchman Charles Pathe founded Pathe Freres (Bros) with his brother Emile. They developed an improved studio camera and the idea of a vertically integrated system of movie production and distribution, thus beginning the early industrialization of cinema. Early in the century the company devised a stencil system for mechanically coloring film. The Pathe brothers perfected the cinematograph play by utilizing huge studios, immense and elaborate sets, professional actors from the stage, and produced plays thought to be beyond the scope of the picture-producer. They developed a mass distribution system throughout the world. The company began mounting plays of historical significance, which led to producing scenes ;on location. Pathe moved its headquarters to the U.S. during WWI. After returning to France, the company eventually met with financial difficulties. Charles retired in 1929. However the Pathe name continued in various incarnations of film companies. Joseph P. Kennedy purchased a large share of Pathe's Exchange in 1929, where he was president and director through the company'ss merger with RKO in 1930. Some Notes on San Francisco Printers by Fred Holabird

There is much discussion among historians and collectors about the printers from California, particularly those from San Francisco. Since San Francisco was the financial center of the gold rush and remains so today, the printers there made their mark upon the companies of the state by producing fancy and artistic products of high quality. Many of these are "household" names among art aficionados, particularly Britton & Rey. Another of the great artists of the period was Grafton T. Brown, the first western African-American artist who was classically trained in graphic design. One artist that is well known among museum collectors is William Keith, perhaps best known for his scenic California oil paintings. Keith, like so many other struggling young artists, got his start with the printers. Some of his work has been found in the wood block prints used to illustrate stock certificates of the 1860's, though none are present in this sale. There were only two in the J. Reynolds Collection that we sold about 1990.

Britton & Rey produced some of the most spectacular artistry on Gold Rush stock certificates. Their lithographs of the period are among the most colorful and artistic of any ever produced in California, prized by institutions and collectors. Britton & Rey were the Currier & Ives of the west coast. Classic high quality mining scenes can be seen on the Bear River & Auburn Water & Mining Co. (1851), Mokelumne and Campo Seco Canal Mining Co. (c1860), and the Tuolumne County Water Co. (c1854) stock certificates. These fine certificates each show large scenes of California Gold Rush life. Only the Bear River piece identifies the artist, L. W. Smith, of which little or nothing is known. It has been argued that Thomas Ayres may have been the artist behind the Mok Hill and Tuolumne pieces, but this is complete speculation. Careful examination of the three different pieces reveals what appears to be at least two different artists, Smith and someone else. Unfortunately, the artists working for Britton & Rey were not listed as such in the early San Francisco directories. The 1852 Parker Directory lists over 25 artists alone, but no employer, though each artist may have worked under contract with a printer or lithographer.

Many institutions and collectors actively collect material from these many printers. The variety is a cross section of the west: Women's Print and G. T. Brown represent what might be considered minority printers.

The following chart of printers was compiled from Langley San Francisco Directories and the Parker 1852 San Francisco Directory. It gives the reader an idea of the approximate time span that specific printers were in business, as well as the sheer number of printers competing in the San Francisco market in the nineteenth century during the gold rush and post-gold rush eras.
