235.      Dakota.  Lawrence.  Black Hills.  Father De Smet Cons Gold Mining Co.  Cert #A1326.  Incorporated in 1878.  Issued to John Trumball for 100 shares in 1883.  Signed by J. B. Haggin president and secretary.  Both signatures are obscured by cancellation holes.  Vignette of Father De Smet preaching to Indians.  Orange border.  Printer - ABN.  7 x 11”.  The Father De Smet was one of the important mines of the Whitewood district, and one of the most difficult for George Hearst to acquire for the Homestake GMC.  This certificate is signed by J. B. Haggin after the Homestake take-over.  It is located just north of the Homestake and eventually became a part of the Homestake, which was located on a gold bearing quartz vein 1.5 miles long and was unbroken by faulting as reported by Burchard in 1883.  In 1883, the mine employed 130 men.  Hearst balked at the asking price of $700,000 and quietly began buying up stock in the company until he and his associates had control, according to Bronson and Watkins, 1977.  Father Pierre Jean De Smet (1801-1873) was a Jesuit missionary.  He met members of the Flathead tribe from Montana while he was in Iowa in 1840 and whom “wished instruction in religion.”  He spent several years on and off in the interior around Montana and the Rocky Mountains.  In 1868 he went to Fort Rice, North Dakota, determined to make peace with the Sioux and where he befriended Sitting Bull.  (Thrapp, Burchard).  Very fine.  Est. $75-150

Ferguson president and secretary.  Vignette at top middle of miners underground with two vignettes at each side.  Brown border and underprint.  Uncancelled.  Printer - Rees Printing, Omaha.  Datelined Deadwood, So Dak.  10 x 12”.  Not listed in the Mines Handbook.  Tears along edges and folds.  Fine.  Est. $50-100

Balzar, 5000 shares.  Signed by Phil Thom, president and GM.  This is an “Interim Pool Certificate” of the Idaho Gold & Platinum Annex Mining Company, promising to give the holder a number of shares equal to the number of shares they may hold in the Gilbert Eureka Mining Company.  Orange border, embossed seal.  No printer shown.  5 1/2 x 10.”  Owned property in Little Valley, near Brunneau.  (Mines Handbook, 1931, p.1021).  Fine.  Est. $25-50

241.      Michigan.  Houghton.  Houghton.  Contact Copper Co.  Cert #A804.  Incorporated in Michigan.  Issued to Bond & Goodwin for 100 shares in 1912.  Signed by H. F. Fay president and Morrissey secretary.  No vignette.  Orange border and safety print.  Uncancelled.  Printer - John A. Lowell Bank Note.  8 x 11”.  This company is a reorganization of the Elm River Copper Co in 1902.  Extensive work was done on the property, but by 1912, no commercial grade ore hadbeen found.  (Copper Handbook, 1912, p.263).  Very fine.  Est. $40-80

242.      Montana.  General.  Glacier National Park Stereocards, c.1890-1900.  Lot of 3 different.  Both are Keystone View Company cards, #13256, #13234 &  #13241.  One of the cards shows Flat Top Mt west from Granite Peak chalets over the forests, Glacier Park.  The second is Sunshine verdure and snow banks along trail to Lincoln Pas, Glacier.  The last card Sparkling water of Track Falls on way to the Mississippi.  All are in mint condition.  Est. $50-100

 

243.      Montana.  Mining.  Bald Butte Gold Mines Co.  Lot of 100 pcs.  All issued 1940-1950.  Cancelled.  All hand signed by one of the Stratton family members as president.  No vignette.  Brown border.  9 x 11”.  Datelined Marysville, Montana.  All fine. Est. $100-200

 

244.      Montana.  Roscoe.  Burn Carved Wooden Postcard, 1909.  Wooden postcard with carving of an Indian with headdress.  Carving is from a hot brand, or something similar.  On reverse is “Merry Christmas - Happy New Year” along left side.  “Post Card” at middle and addressed to Mrs. M. H. Murray, Roscoe, Mont.  All of this is also hot burn carved.  A red ribbon is attached to one side of the card with 1909 on the ribbon.  Very fine.  Est. $25-50
