Bailey, owner and proprietor of the stage line running between those two towns, Oct. 22, 1904-October 22, 1905. One and 1/2 pages, attached to plain brown paper backing. Est. $75-150
WONDER DISTRICT: Rich veins were discovered by miners from Fairview in the early part of 1906. Within one month, hundreds of people rushed to Wonder. By the end of the summer of 1906, two newspapers were being printed in Wonder, a post office was opened and all the typical mining camp businesses were in operation. The most profitable operation was the Nevada Wonder MC, which built a mill near the mine in 1913. The camp was but a ghost town by 1919. (Paher, p.104).
246. Nevada. Churchill. Wonder. Daisy Wonder Mining Co. Cert. #1381, incorporated in Arizona, 1906. Issued to J.R. Orr, 1911, 1000 shares. Signed by Jack Davis, vice-president, and A.K. Wheeler, secretary. Gold seal, three mining vignettes, Printer: Goes & Nevada Press, Carson City. 6 x 9. Uncancelled. Born in 1870, “Diamondfield Jack” Davis was a true western gunman. He was wrongfully convicted of killing two sheepherders in southern Idaho and sentenced to hang on four separate occasions from 1897-1902. He worked unsuccessfully as a prospector and then turned to the cattle business. Because he could not stop talking about diamonds, the other cattlemen dubbed him “old Diamondfield” or “Diamondfield Jack,” about 1890. He was hired by John Sparks, later governor of Nevada, to protect his herds from thieves and troublemakers during a range war between the sheepherders and cattlemen, becoming a hired gunman. Sparks later testified in Davis’ defense during the murder trials in Idaho and Davis was pardoned. He quickly returned to Nevada to prospect, grubstaked by Wingfield and Ford and borrowed money from Nixon. Following the lead of his friends Wingfield, Oddie and Nixon, Davis formed speculative mining companies which soon made money for his backers. Davis and Wingfield were even president and vice president of the Diamondfield Triangle property, and a similar arrangement at the Diamondfield Bullfrog involved Tasker Oddie and Davis. Jack never lost faith in the Daisy, and in later years threatened to build a new mill. [Ref: Grover]. Ex. Est. $100-300

The district remained active with leasers until 1917 when rich silver ore was discovered in an abandoned gold mine. The word of the camp got out by 1919 and a “mad” rush to Divide began.
