One of the many Diamondfield companies located after the strike of “Diamondfield” Jack Davis, about 4 miles east of Goldfield. Diamondfield Jack Davis was a true western gunman. He was wrongfully convicted of killing two sheepherders in southern Idaho and sentenced to hang on four separate occasions from 1897-1902. The case became famous, with a remarkable tangled web of evidence, witnesses, and political agendas. He was born in 1870 and by the time he reached 20 he was working in western mines. After a few years as an unsuccessful prospector, he turned to the cattle business and became a cow puncher. Because he could not stop talking about diamonds, the other cattlemen nicknamed him “Old Diamondfield” or “ Diamondfield Jack.” He was considered a “disagreeable cowboy” because of his feistiness and reputation as a cattle gunslinger, which made him an easy target for the sheepherders. After he was finally pardoned in 1902, he hurried to Nevada to prospect. In Tonopah, he persuaded George Wingfield and Ford to grubstake him. Nixon also lent him money. Davis staked a number of good claims right away, particularly his claims just east of Goldfield. Jack followed the leads of his friends Wingfield, Oddie, and Nixon and formed speculative mining companies which soon made money for his backers. Davis continued with his flair for guns, and many tales were told of his Goldfield work when the union troubles occurred. The local papers called him a “walking arsenal, “ and the “most notorious gunman in camp.” The Diamondfield Carissa Co. had an office at 527 Main St. in Goldfield. The Jumbo Extension owned a triangular fraction, the Wedge claim, between the Mohawk #2 claim and the Jumbo claim, and occupied an apex of the vein mined on the Mohawk, which was owned by the Goldfield Consolidated Mines Company. The precedent of legality and wisdom over the disposition of this claim was one of the most important events in the history of the district. Because of the character of the vein deposits at Goldfield, endless litigation could have stopped development and even killed the district if the law of apex were as ingeniously invoked or as fiercely contested as it had been in other districts. Fortunately for the district, the mine owners were wise enough to avoid this danger by compromise or consolidation. In February, 1908 the Jumbo Extension Company and its tenants were enjoined from working on the Wedge claim due to apex conflict. In July of that year the conflict was resolved when the Jumbo Ext. MC deeded the Wedge claim to Goldfield Cons in exchange for recognition of existing leases and agreements on proportional assignment of profits on other claims where apex rights might possibly conflict. WEEPAH DISTRICT: Paher writes that Indians first reported gold being found in pockets (small placers) early in 1902, Weepah meaning rain water in Shoshone. About 200 people rushed to the area, but the excitement died out within a few weeks. The district was not re-ignited for another 25 years. Two Tonopah prospectors, Leonard Traynor and Frank Horton Jr, are credited with re-discovering Weepah in 1927. The news got out and the last great Nevada gold rush ensued. But this rush involved autos, which doubled as housing, instead of the mule. The district attracted “mail order” prospectors who pretty much had no idea what they were doing. The town swelled to 2000 people. By the end of 1927, the excitement was waning when George Wingfield gave up on the district. An open pit mine remained in operation until around 1938. (Paher, p.418).
