940. Bottles. Prince Albert Figural Bottle. 11.75” tall, clear glass, tooled top, pontiled base. Circa 1900?, maybe older, date uncertain. The figure shows an older, distinguished Albert with thick mustache in uniform with four breast medals.

Albert (1819-1861) was the husband of Queen Victoria. His influence with British Government helped modernize society for the better. He died from Typhoid, greatly mourned by British citizens. Mark Twain wrote of Albert in a manuscript he planned to publish, but never finished. His agent later published parts from the work in Letters From the Earth. Twain tells the story of looking at monuments all over London, expecting to see the biggest monuments made for the great kings and queens of Britain. Instead, as he noted, the largest monument was for Prince Albert. Twain was astounded. “Napoleon’s tomb at Paris has long ranked as their most sumptuous testimonial to departed greatness that Europe could show - but it is insignificant compared to this memorial …the finest monument in the world erected to glorify - the commonplace!” Probably rare. COINS

968. Coin. $20 Double Eagle 1889 Gold Coin Pocket Piece Commemorating the German Surrender May 7, 1945. The obverse is an 1889 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. The reverse has been polished to a smooth flat surface and has the following engraving “Reims / May 7, 1945 / 0241 (E. T. O.).” Reims is the town were the German surrender took place on May 7, 1945. We believe that the person that owned this piece was probably present at the surrender and had this pocket piece made to commemorate the historic event. Unfortunately, there is no name engraved on the coin. The ETO is short for European Theatre of Operations. The 0241 may represent the beginning of the European Theatre, though some note this as April, 1941, instead of February. On May 7, 1945, a ceremony took place in Reims, France with the formal unconditional surrender of the German forces. Major officers were there from the Allied forces to witness the signing. Commemorates that event, and its appearance as an engraved $20 gold coin indicates it had important significance to its owner, though unknown. Extensive research on the officers present may reveal in personal papers who may have made this piece. Xf. Est. $2500-5000

995. Mining. Book. Mineral Resources West of the Rocky Mountains, by Ross Raymond, 1869. 256pp. This is the third in a series of important reports on western mines by the US govt. The first two years were written by J. Ross Browne (1867-8) before Raymond took over when Congress wouldn’t pay Browne for the great job he did in 1868. Raymond wrote the remainder of the series, the last one dated 1875, but not published until 1877, causing his departure and ultimate shake-up of the entire mining reporting system to Congress (that’s another story.) This volume is important for several reasons: It reports on the mines at Lander (Reese River District, Nevada), reports on the Freiberg School of Mines and the American students who are a virtual who’s who of the mining and geology business for decades to come, has a great section on the early mining in Montana, who the Montanans said had been omitted by Browne, etc. The book is in excellent condition, with withdrawn stamp on title page from MIT. Slight splitting at bindings, typical of gov’t bindings.

A chief constituent of their shipping line was the coal business, in which the B&O shipped more than 52 million tons in 1926 alone. That year they had operating revenues in excess of $250 million, ranking them as one of the world’s great railroads. [ref: Moody’s 1926 Steam Railroads].

W. R. Scott was president of the Southern Pacific-Louisiana Lines, serving under the corporate umbrella of the Southern Pacific Co. Many of the descendants of the original Central Pacific Railroad Co. founders were still active in the SP Co. in 1924, including Henry Huntington, Ogden Mills.
