Printer - H. E. Mathews, SF. 4 x 9”. Datelined Oakland. “Location of Works, Cornucopia Mining District, Elko Co, Nevada” printed on certificate. The Cornucopia district is located 65 miles northeast of Elko. The camp boomed from 1872-1883 until the post office moved to Tuscarora. (Carlson, p.87). Extremely fine. Est. $120-250 511. Nevada. Elko. Elko. Commercial Hotel Letterhead, 1939. Letter on letterhead of Commercial Hotel, Elko, Nevada, from the desk of Newton H. Crumley, Jr., Mgr., dated September 23, 1939, to Norris Bertrand in South Mountain, Nevada. Signed: Frank B. Evans, Las Vegas, Nevada. Est. $25-50 512. Nevada. Elko. Gold Circle. Elko Prince Silver Ingot. 3.5” long x 1.25” wide x 0.75” tall. 1.6 pounds. The bottom of the ingot is stamped with “Elko Prince.” The top of the ingot has the initials “O. W. B.” The Elko Prince Mining Co operated the Elko Prince mine which was located at Midas in the Gold Circle district, about 50 miles northeast of Golconda. Production began in November, 1915 and continued until 1922, when the mill burned down. Under the Elko Prince MC, the mine produced about $1.57 million in gold and silver. In 1924, the property was acquired by Noble Getchell, forming the Gold Circle Cons Mines Co. Later, the Gold & Silver Circle Mines Co operated all of the Getchell properties. In total, the Elko Prince is credited with over $2.5 million in production. We were not able to figure out who O. W. B. was. He does not appear to be an officer of the company. We are also not sure under which company this ingot was poured. But we are guessing that was under the Elko Prince MC. (Mines Handbook, 1925, p.1332-33; 1937, p.367). The ingot may have some gold mixed with the silver. Est. $900-1800 513. Nevada. Elko. Gold Circle. Gold & Silver Circle Mines Inc. Cert #U128. Incorporated in Nevada, 1935. Issued to Howard Kimball for 5000 shares in 1937. Printed signatures of Noble Getchell. Orange border and safety print. Uncancelled. Printer - Hamilton Bank Note. 8 x 12”. Please see the story about the Elko Prince ingot. A nice companion piece for the ingot. Extremely fine. Est. $25-50 514. Nevada. Elko. Tuscarora. Elko Cons Mining Co. Cert #1375. Incorporated in 1881. Issued to E. R. Grant for 100 shares in 1882. Signed by Geo. W. Frank president and William Bush secretary. Small vignette at left edge of a mill. Black border and print on yellow paper. Uncancelled. Printer - E. Bosque, SF. 4 x 9”. Datelined New York. “Location, Tuscarora Mining District, Elko Co., Nevada” printed on certificate. The property adjoined the Navajo claims, one of the better producing gold mines in the district. The Elko Cons had 2 inclined shafts in 1881 to depths of a reported 125 feet. No ore grades were mentioned in Burchard (1882, Report of the Director of the Mint) but he did report that they had mined ore. “The chief obstacle this camp has had to contend against has been the want of fuel. Heretofore sagebrush has been used almost exclusively, but the country is now pretty well cleared of it for a distance of 15 to 20 miles around Tuscarora.” (p.140). Rare. Very fine. Est. $150-250 515. Nevada. Elko. Tuscarora. Silver Prize Gold & Silver Mining Co. Cert #992. Incorporated in 1877. Issued to Woods Freeborn for 50 shares in 1878. Signed by W. R. Shony vice president and Chas. R. Clark. No vignette. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 4 x 9”. Datelined San Francisco. The Silver Prize mine was probably a play on the well known Tuscarora mine Grand Prize. The Grand Prize is listed as existing from 1876-1890 producing $2.5 million. (Couch, 1943, p.46). Trimmed tight at left. Minor foxing along edges. Fine to very fine. Est. $100-200 516. Nevada. Esmeralda. Benton. Comanche Mill & Mining Co. Check #609. Superintendent’s Office printed at top. Datelined Benton, Nev, 1878. Issued to John Dugan for $77.08. Signed by A. Morgan, superintendent. “Comanche Mill & Mining Co” printed at bottom. Printer not noted. Orange 2 cent Imprinted Revenue at middle. Not listed in Castenholz. RN-G style revenue. Benton was never included as part of Nevada, so this must have been a mistake on the part of the Comanche officers. Benton is a small town just west of the Nevada state border on the west side of Boundary Peak (the highest peak in Nevada). Extremely rare. Very fine. Est. $200-400 517. Nevada. Esmeralda. Bovard. Bovard Cons Mines Co. Cert. #M483, incorporated in Maine. Issued to H. Hedrick, 1909, 1000 shares. Signed by E.R. Dodge, vice-president, and by treasurer. Vignette of a man operating a hydraulic drill in underground mining scene. Purple border. Printed by New York BNC. Uncancelled., 8 x 11.” Two punch holes, left side, foxing, slight staining, but very fine otherwise. The Bovard Mining District was located about 22 miles NE of Hawthorne, near the Gabbs range. Was organized in 1908 shortly after mineral discoveries made. [Ref: Carlson, 1974, p. 57] Est. $30-60 518. Nevada. Esmeralda. Bovard. Bovard Cons Mines Co. Cert. #B2086, incorporated in Maine. Issued to C.F. Belser, 1910, 1000 shares. Signed by E.R. Dodge, vice-president and by asst-treasurer. Vignette of man working underground with hydraulic drill. Orange border and seal. Uncancelled. Printer: NYBNC. 8 x 11”. See lot above for the story. Xf. Est. $30-60 (same style as shown above) 519. Nevada. Esmeralda. Divide. West Mines Corp. Cert. #442. Incorporated in Nevada in 1927. Issued to E. Gregovich for 1000 shares in 1927. Signed by president W.E. Sirbeck and secretary Harry B. Ruhl. Uncancelled. Vignette of miners sitting on train car carrying ore. Brown border, gilt seal. Printed by Goes. Vf, folds. 6” x 10”. Company formed as a reorganization of the Reorganized West Divide MC and the West Divide MC. By 1931, owned property at Hornsilver, Lodi, Quartz Mountain, Divide and Silver Peak. All of these properties hover around the line between Nye and Esmeralda Counties. No production noted. (Mines Handbook, 1931, p.1644-45), Small tear along fold crease. Fine to very fine. Est. $30-60 520. Nevada. Esmeralda. Esmeralda Oil Corp. Cert #1751. Incorporated in Delaware. Issued to Arthur Walsh for 10 shares. Signed by Thomas B. Prato vice president and Walter W. Hugling treasurer. Vignette of a spread winged eagle on an outcrop. Orange border and seal. Uncancelled. Printer - Broun Green, NY. 8 x 11”. We are not sure if this company was an oil wildcat in Esmeralda County or not. In the 1960 and 70’s, Fish Lake Valley, Esmeralda County, was drilled for natural gas. Overall, the drilling was unsuccessful, with a few of the holes tapping hot ground water. One such hole was developed into an improved hot pool in the middle of Fish Lake Valley. There is a possibility that the name Esmeralda has nothing to do with Esmeralda County, Nevada. Piece missing from lower left corner, minor foxing. Fine. Est. $20-40 521. Nevada. Esmeralda. Gold Mountain. Gold Mountain Cons Mining Co. Cert #138. Incorporated in South Dakota. Issued to James Long Jr for 1000 shares in 1904. Signed by Alfred Carr president and J .H. Cronk secretary. Vignette of three miners underground. Brown border and seal. Uncancelled. Printer - Adams & Grace, NY. 8 x 11”. This company was probably located in the Gold Mountain district, known today as Divide. The district was worked around 1902 until about 1905, but the Goldfield and Tonopah Booms left this district without much activity until around 1919. Very fine. Est. $30-60 522. Nevada. Esmeralda. Gold Mountain. State Line Gold Mining Co No 1. Cert #A39. Incorporated in New York. Issued to H. M. Cooke for 50 shares in 1881. Signed by D. F. Verdenal secretary and Lee R. Shrycock president. Vignette at left of two prospectors inspecting rock float. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer - ABN. 7 x 11”. Datelined New York. “Location of Mine, Gold Mountain District, Esmeralda County, Nevada” printed on certificate. The Gold Mountain district was the original name of the present day Divide district. There were four companies that were in operation at the same time as this company. The State Line MC Nos. 1, 2 & 3 as well as the Miller Mountain MC. We have never had the State Line No. 1 certificate. We have seen several of the No. 3 and a few of the No 2. All of the four companies were signed by the same officers. Probably each of the claims had its own stock issuance. Very fine. Est. $175-300 523. Nevada. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Fawn Gold Mining Co. Cert. #140. Incorporated in Arizona Territory, 1904. [Ref: Stager]. VF. Est. $25-50 575. Nevada. Lander. Reese River. Mills, Post & White Cons Silver Mining Co. Cert #16. Incorporated in Nevada Territory, 1863. Nevada Territorial. Issued to Louis Janin Jr. for 20 shares in Aug, 1863. Signed by A. A. Simon president and Geo. May secretary. No vignette. Black border with green and black print. Cancelled by red pen. Printer - Enterprise Print. 4 x 9”. Datelined Austin, N. T. “Reese River Mining District, Lander County, N. T.” printed at top. Endorsed on reverse by Janin and witnessed signed by Henry Polhemus. Louis Janin was born in New Orleans and attended the prestigious Freiberg School of Mines. Founded in 1766, the school played host to most of America’s top mining geologists and engineers in the 1850’s-1870’s. Louis Janin attended at the same time as his brother Henry Janin. Among the other students there at the same time were Raphael Pumpelly and James Hague. Ross Raymond would follow three years later. Sam Emmons seven years later. Arnold Hague followed his brother in 1865. [Raymond, Mineral Resources of the States and Territories West of the Rocky Mountains, 1869]. Many of these men were among the select few chosen by Clarence King to study and publish their findings on America’s premier ore deposits when the USGS was formed in 1879. By 1880, work was underway on the Comstock, Leadville, Eureka, as well as the Grand Canyon. [Spence, Mining Engineers and the American West, 1993]. Louis Janin would also educate his own sons in mining and engineering, passing along the Louis Janin name to one of them. After his work at Freiberg was completed, he and his brothers spent time at the Ecole des Mines in Paris. Janin entered private practice as a mining geologist and engineer after his French education. From there, Louis was hired by Sam Butterworth and the Arizona Mining Co. Sam Colt, of Colt Firearms fame, used Pumpelly to manage his mining operations in Arizona with the Sonora Mining and Exploring Co. Both mining groups were attacked by Apaches while working on the Heintzelman, Salero and neighboring mines. The Apaches killed at least three of the crew, and drove off the rest. The story was told through Pumpelly in his Reminiscences [1918] and J. Ross Brown in Apache Country, 1868. These remarkable stories highlight the excitement and difficulties of mining in the American west at the end of the California gold rush period. Janin went on to work on the Comstock Lode, where he gained much fame in working with the Gould & Curry Co. His reputation quickly grew, and he became a much-wanted commodity to the Nevada mining companies. He later established his office in San Francisco. Janin became one of America’s pre eminent mining engineers. Henry D. Polhemus was a ticket clerk for the San Jose Railway in the San Francisco Office in 1864-5. Janin probably had him endorse the stock while he was in San Francisco. Since this certificate is cert #16, Janin may have been enjoined by the Mills, Post & White Co. as a consulting engineer for their properties at Austin. The Reese River district was booming, and this company was one of the most heavily traded of the Reese River stocks for the next two years. It was later taken over by the Manhattan Co. Janin’s signature on stocks is extremely rare. Small tear at right edge where what appears to have been a revenue stamp affixed. Very fine. Est. $600-1000 576. Nevada. Lander. Reese River. The Roman Brothers SMC does not show up as a producing mine in our references, though the mine may have had a different name than Roman Brothers. Since the certificate does not say Reese River the company may have had property in an outlying district of Lander County. James B. Taylor, who signs as president, may have been the same J. B. Taylor who was a famous author living in New York during this time period. Taylor wrote of the California Gold Rush in his book El Dorado, considered a classic from that period. He was exceptionally well known and would have made an excellent choice for a mining company president. Extremely fine. Est. $500-1000 579. Nevada. Lander. Silver Creek. Silver Creek Datelined Manuscript Letter, 1887. To Mr. S. Cresenzo from J. “Wetbel” regarding some railroad ties and the money to be received for them. Written on 5x8 lined notebook paper, embossed “Golden Gate.” Classic phonetic spelling of many of the words and phrases. 4pps. There are several places with the name Silver Creek in Nevada. The author of the letter notes that the Manhattan Co will be taking some of his ties. This might suggest that this Silver Creek was located in Nye County, west of Belmont in the Toquima Range. Another possibility is Silver Creek Ranch in Lander County, that was a railroad stop. The ranch was named for the creek that was a tributary to Reese River, just north of Italian Creek (Carlson, p.216-217). We chose to place the letter in Lander due to the existence of a rail stop, but also like the Nye County option. Est. $25-50 580. Nevada. Lincoln. Bristol. Bristol Cons Mines & Smelting Co. Craven, 1907, for 13,500 shares. Signed by president Thos. Ramsey and secretary E. R. Dodd. Vignette, top center, of 6 miners working underground. Black border, gilt safety print and seal. Uncancelled. Printer: Utah Litho. Co. 8x10. Tom Ramsey was one of the first prospectors to arrive in Goldfield after the initial discovery. In May, 1903, he followed Harry Stimler and W. Marsh, and later J. L. Butler and Tom Kendall, who staked the first claims Feb 28, 1903. One of them found ore on the Sand Storm claim creating a rush, and Tom Ramsey arrived on his buckboard drawn by two burros, as reported by Sam Davis in his History of Nevada. A. D. Meyers showed up about the same time. The group staked a number of mining claims that made some of the partners rich, including Al Meyers, who had his name added to the locations on the condition he do the assessment and location work. He soon sold his interest for $400,000. Tom Ramsey sold his 25% interest in the Mohawk claims for $750. The other half interest was owned by Tom’s brother Harry and RC Crook, who both sold out to Nixon and Wingfield for a substantial sum. Meanwhile, Tom Ramsey, who had staked many claims in the gut of Goldfield, sold out quickly for a pittance, never realizing the riches he had in his grasp. [Ref: Zanjani, Goldfield and Davis, History of Nevada.]. Ramsey continued prospecting in western Nevada. He located some claims in the winter of 1905 at a site 18 miles northeast of Virginia City. A small rush ensued, and a townsite bearing his name was organized in July, 1906. A newspaper, the Ramsey Recorder, was soon published in August, which lasted until November, 1908. [Lingenfelter & Gash, Newspapers of Nevada]. 2) Nevada Leadville Mines Co, Cert. #11. Incorporated in Nevada, 1907. Issued to E.C. Harris in 1907 for 18,999 shares. Signed by president L.E. C. Flanked by two underground mining scenes. Gilt border, safety print and seal. Uncancelled. Printer: Goes. 8 x 10 1/2. Grey matting, mahogany frame with gilt pinstripe, glass. Overall measures 14 x 20.” Professionally framed. The Ramsey District is situated on the SE flank of the Flowery Range in N. Lyon Co. on the Storey Co. border. The Ramsey-Comstock orebody of gold and silver was discovered in 1906, the town of Ramsey was founded, and a 30-ton amalgamating mill was built. The mill operated till late in 1910, producing about $80,000. The Lahontan MCo. took over the Ramsey-Comstock Mine in 1919. [Ref: Mining Districts and Mineral Resources of Nevada, by F.C. Lincoln, 1982, p. 130.]. Leadville is located 38 miles north of Gerlach, Washoe County, on the flank of Hog Ranch Mountain. The district, discovered in the early 1900’s, was the largest producer of lead and silver in Washoe Co. The only important producer in the district to date has been the Leadville mine, acquired by John Harmon before 1909 and then organized as the Tohoqua MC., with first production from the Leadville district in 1910. In 1920 A.A. Codd reorganized the mine as the Leadville MC and by 1925 the mine produced in excess of 1,000,000 ounces of silver, 3,500,000 pound of lead, and minor amounts of gold and copper with a gross value in excess of $1,150,000. Leased between 1926-28, the mine was ordered closed by the State Inspector of Mines and has not been worked since. The district has been idle since 1941.[Ref: ibid., p. 67.] Est. $300-600 592.
