Baker secretary. Vignette of an underground mining scene. Black border. Uncancelled. Printer - Homer Lee Bank Note. 7 x 10". Datelined New York. Company was located at Salt Springs, Death Valley. In 1881 stock promoter James Seymour purchased the old Salt Springs mine at the south end of Death Valley, renamed it the South Pacific, invented a fanciful history and production report, and began floating stock. The scheme even involved the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey and several prominent New York brokers to give it authenticity. Within a month the stock rose from $1 to $14 a share. Seymour began to unload his stock in 1882, clearing nearly $1 million. The scheme made millions at the expense of unsuspecting market players and investors (Lingenfelter, 1986, p.158-59). Very fine. Est. $150-300

Boxer secretary. Vignette of spread winged eagle atop dome. Black border with green seal. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 8 x 10", Datelined Los Angeles. We were not able to find an exact reference to this company. We did find a Gold Belt mine located in the Dome Mtns, La Paz County, AZ and a Gold Belt mine located on Goat Mtn, San Bernardino County, CA. What may be a closer match is that the company was located in the Gold Belt district, Inyo County, CA.. This district was organized in 1904 and covered "much of Northern Death Valley and the ranges on both sides, the southern boundary spanning from Towne's Pass in the Panamint Range to Daylight Pass separating the Funeral Range from the Grapevine Range." The founders of the district included: Joe Simpson, A. V. Carpenter, W. L. McGregor, George Page, G. A. Fattler, Thomas King, Fred Adam, J. L. Starbrough and William Miller (www.gbr.death-valley.us). Extremely fine. Est. $100-200

164. California. Los Angeles. Los Angeles. New Monte Cristo Mining Co. Cert #1313. Incorporated in Nevada. Issued to F. J. Dourson for 100 shares in 1927. Signed by C. C. Julian president and H. B. Flasher secretary. Small vignette of company logo. Blue border. Uncancelled. Printer - Jeffries Lithograph. 8 x 12". A long history of scandal and fraud led to the formation of the New Monte Cristo MC. C. C. Julian was an aggressive promoter, some would say con artist. "The history of the promotion of this company and its predecessors is replete with legal difficulties, largely because of the methods used in the stock selling campaigns. Characterized by extravagant statements the promoter's somewhat flamboyant advertising drew the fire of the California Corporate Commission. The selling of capital stock in the Western Lead Mines Co (one of the companies controlled by Julian) was first banned in 1926, when at a hearing in May, the evidence introduced led to the opinion that "the sale would be unfair, unjust and inequitable to the purchasers thereof."

Following this the promoters bought control of the Monte Cristo M&MC, secured the two British Columbia properties, and the Ballas mine in Arizona...which was placed under the control of the Julian Merger Mines Co, which the promoters tried to 'put over' contending that this corporation, organized under the laws of the District of Columbia, was excluded from the Corporate Securities Act of California." The California State Commissioner banned the sale of the Julian Merger Co leading to the formation of the New Monte Cristo M&MC. (Mines Handbook, 1931, p.627-28). We placed this company in Los Angeles, where the principal office was located. The company owned property in several places. Extremely fine. Est. $50-100

168. California. Mono. Patterson. Great Western Mining Co. Cert #74. Incorporated in Pennsylvania. Issued to Charles S. Hinchman for 500 shares in 1886. Signed by Robert Lanbon president and Geo A. Krause secretary. Great vignette of several workers in a slab quarry. Vignette at left edge of a mountain man taking a break to get a drink of water. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer - ABN. 7 x 11". Datelined Philadelphia. The Great Western mine was located on the northwestern side of Sweetwater Canyon. A few hundred feet of vein material was carved out by a glacier, and the quartz was discovered during the 1870's boom associated with Lundy and Bodie. The mine had an 80 foot tunnel with reported assays of $117-160 per ton. (Burchard, 1882). Very fine. Est. $200-400

169. California. Mono. Patterson. Mono Mining Co of Nevada. Cert #297. Incorporated in Nevada. Issued to Mrs. Ernsy Sievin for 250 shares in 1922. Signed by John A. Anderson president and Alvin E. Stein secretary. Vignette at upper left of several miners underground with smaller vignettes of miners. Uncancelled. Printer - Goes. 8 x 10". "Principal Office: Sweetwater, Nevada." printed on certificate. Company actually owned the Silverado and Kentuck mines in the Patterson district, Mono County, 7 miles west of Sweetwater, Nevada. The ore was reported to run at $15 - $40 per ton, with little gold values. Historical production from the mines was said to be $625,000. Mono MC was intending to drive a 650 feet crosscut tunnel, construct a 5800 foot aerial tram and erect a 100 ton cyanide mill. (Mines Handbook, 1925, p.2346-47). Extremely fine. Est. $75-150

170. California. Nevada. Grass Valley. Manhattan Gold Mining Co. Cert #14. Incorporated in 1899. Issued to C. E. Hegard for 50 shares in 1899. Signed by C. E. Hegard president and Geo E. Bangel secretary. Vignette of spread winged eagle. Green border. Cancelled by red pen across certificate. Printer - H. S. Crocker, SF. 10 x 13". Datelined San Francisco. One 5 cent documentary stamp at upper left edge. Originally known as Goodall Cons. Company was located 3.5 miles from Grass Valley, but we were not able to locate any production records. There was also a Manhattan mine located at Knoxville, Napa County, where the Manhattan Quicksilver mine was operating. This mine was later turned into a gold producing property. (Crawford, Report of the State Mineralogist). Very fine. Est. $50-150

171. California. Nevada. Meadow Lake. Girard Mining Co Prospectus, c.1902. 8pp folding single sheet prospectus. Arizona incorporation, Sacramento promotion. They built an 8 stamp mill in 1901, claiming to crush 8 tons per day of $40-$50 rock (though the assays on the back page are far less). They must have been short of ore, because they were offering to do custom milling. Black on yellow. This is a classic mining promotion, potentially worthless, with the prospectus not written by mining men. Meadow Lake was at the height of activity well before 1900, and there was a flurry of activity parallel to the Tonopah-Goldfield rush of 1900-1908. Not listed in Meadow Lake Gold Town by Fatout. Est. $50-150

172. California. Nevada. Meadow Lake. Independence Lake Real Photo Postcards. Lot of 2 different cards. 2 b/w scenes of Independence Lake. Neither card indicates photographers, but apparently they were from two different photographers. Extremely fine. Est. $50-100

173. California. Nevada. Nevada City. Old West portrait CDV's, by "Charles Ferrand, Photographer, Pine Street, Nevada, Cal." CDV portraits of three different men, each measuring 2 3/8" x 4", each with printing on reverse side "Charles Ferrand, Photographer, Pine Street, Nevada, Cal." Very fine. The people were probably dignitaries from Nevada County. Est. $50-100

174. California. Orange. Anaheim. Disney Colored Postcards of Four Different Designs. 75 chromo litho "Pocahantas" cards; 150 "Sorcery in the Sky" cards; and 60 Mickey & Minnie cards. All in color, most new, some written on. Est. $25-50

175. California. Placer. Auburn & Rock Creek Gold Mining Co. Cert.#49. Incorporated in New York. Issued to John Permingham for 100 shares in 1880. Signed by president P.W. Bowen and secretary Charles L. Burmham. Uncancelled. Black border on crème paper. 6 1/4" x 10 1/2". Xf, tips of corners folded. California mill was constructed in 1880, probably with funds from this offering. In late 1880 they reported a "chute of exceedingly rich ore." (Burchard 1881). By 1881 the mine had become idle, reported that J. W. Foulkes & Co. owned it, thus the A&RC GMC probably lost their lease, and the investors their money. (Burchard 1882). Est. $100-200

176. California. Placer. Auburn. Auburn & Rock Creek Gold Mining Co. Cert. #52. Incorporated in New York 1880. Issued to John Burnham for 100 shares in 1880. Signed by P. N. Bowen president and Charles L. Burnham secretary. No vignette. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer - N. Y. Lith & Engr Co. 6 x 10. Placer County, California printed on certificate. Datelined New York. There was an Auburn and Rock Creek mine located near Auburn that was a quartz lode vein. A mill was built to process gold in quartz ore after this underwriting took place. They reported a chute of rich ore, but it must have been small, because they were idle within a year. In 1882 the mine was sold to J. W. Foulkes & Co and remained idle. Burchard never identified the district. None of the people on this certificate are listed in the Placer County History or in SF Directories. (Burchard, 1881, 1882). Extremely fine. Est. $100-300

177. California. Placer. Big Black Canyon. New Basil Cons Gravel Mining Co. Cert #79. Incorporated in 1881. Issued to Mrs. Sarah Giles for 100 shares in 1884. Signed by Henry Stinegger president and F. X. Simon secretary. No vignette. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer - Britton & Rey. 4 x 9". Datelined San Francisco. "Location: Big Black Canon Mng Dist., Placer County, Cal." printed on certificate. The New Basil had 1000 acres along Whiskey Hill channel, a fossil channel that was found to be south of the famous Blue Lead. The company drove a shaft to access the pary ore at the bottom of the channel, which was similar in grade to Whiskey Hill mine. (Burchard, 1885.) F. X. Simon was a clerk at Britton & Rey Printers. Five assessments stamps on reverse. Arcuate brown discoloration on reverse with subtle bleed through to front. Fine to very fine. Est. $200-400

178. California. Placer. Damascus. Societe Civile Mines De Golder River. Cert #2247. Issued to bearer in 1885. Signed. Original 33 coupons attached. No vignette. Brown border with green underprint. European style certificate. Printed entirely in French. 8 x 14". The consignor has had checks from this same company that were datelined Damascus, Cal. This is the only reference to the company's location. (dm). Damascus is a town located in Placer County, near Westville. The post office for this town opened and closed several times between 1860 and 1908. Extremely fine. Est. $100-200

179. California. Placer. Gold Hill. Gold Hill Masonic Lodge, No. 32, F.& G. A. M. 50th Anniversary Program, 1903. A four-page program booklet commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Gold Hill Lodge, No. 32., Lincoln, Placer county, California, May 28, 1903. Postcard size 4 1/8" x 6 1/4", white cardstock cover, with gold print, American flag and lodge flag overlayed. Bound with red cord. Water stained. Est. $25-50

180. California. Plumas. Round Valley. Plumas Mining Co Prospectus, 1902. Prospectus with 2 different informational flyers. Prospectus is 4pp, 8 x 11", non-illustrated. Folds, some wear. The info flyers are completely different with folds and wear. 9.5 x 16". The flyers give many names to this mine, including Pacific, West Pacific, Drury and Pacific, McGill and Standard. Located 2 miles west of Greenville. Apparently the former is the entire succession of owners up to the time of the prospectus in 1902. This shows how tough it is to look up info on a mine when the name of the controlling company changes constantly. The flyers give the hope of some success but the entire package lacks cohesive data. The property is not on the Mother Lode as described. This is a classic case of eastern promoters getting a property after it has been extensively worked by western miners. Est. $100-200

181. California. Sacramento. Folsom. Grand Gift Concert Lottery Ticket, 1871. This lottery ticket, #11115, was for a Grand Gift Concert to be held at the Fireman's Hall in Folsom, Cal., July 4th, 1871. The ticket it indicates that there were to be 667 gifts and 30,000 tickets to be sold. The cost of the ticket was $2.50. At the left there is a chart of the prize amounts. Grand prize was $10,000 and there were 500 prizes of $20. At the right is another table that shows that the total cash disbursement was to be $45,000. Vignette of a variation of the California State Seal. Attractive green background design ticket. 3.5 x 6. Minor water damage on reverse that barely affects the front. Very fine. $250 This lottery ticket, #11115, was for a Grand Gift Concert to be held at the Fireman's Hall in Folsom, Cal., July 4th, 1871. 182. California. Sacramento. Sacramento. J. C. Meussdorffer Advertising Cover and Contents. A lot of 3 different pieces from 1869. A Wells, Fargo & Co Franked Cover that contained the monthly statement of the Sacramento branch of Meussdorffer and an insurance renewal notice. The monthly statement is from J. F. Slater, presumably the branch manager at the Sacramento store. The report shows that the month of February was a tough one for sales. Profit was only $117.23. Also included is a renewal notice for fire insurance through the Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Co. Slater comments that he would prefer to switch to the Fireman's Fund of SF to carry the insurance. A great lot from one the famous San Francisco merchants. All very fine. Rare. Est. $150-300

183. California. Sacramento. Sacramento. Quicksilver Flask Sales Receipt, 1865. A bill of sale for 40 flasks of quicksilver coordinated by C. J. Brenham, the Sacramento agent for the Quicksilver Mining Co. The full flasks cost $1989 with a shipping charge of $12 (30 cents each). This is a relatively small amount suggesting that the flasks were destined for the Mother Lode district. The check given Brenham was written on Jno Simes & Co Bank, with a major partner being Hastings of Sacramento. The bank went broke, closing its doors in 1871, taking down Hastings & Co as well. (Cross, Financing an Empire, 1927, p.387). C. J. Brenham came to San Francisco in 1841. He was mayor of that city in 1851 (Bancroft's History of California, vol 6, p.761). 7.5 x 12", printed on blue paper. Very fine. Est. $100-200
