Nye. [Belmont] Barcelona. [Spanish Belt]. Introduction
Located just six miles northwest of the center of Belmont, the Barcelona was the key mine in the district for years. They appear to have processed about $200,000 in silver-gold ores from about 1870-1940, according to Kleinhampl & Ziony in Mineral Resources of Northern Nye County, 1984. In 1880, they only shipped three tons valued at $150 to a mill in Eureka, and Burchard guessed that they would build a mill near the mine soon. [Burchard 1880, p100, 1881p143] Benjamin Flint was the president of the Pacific Land & Trust Co. in SF. Chas. Buckingham was an agent for the Diamond Drill Co. [Langley, 1881 SF Dir]. The district name was later changed from Spanish Belt to Barcelona to reflect the importance of the mine. It is included within the Belmont district by several authors.

Nye. Midas (Ione). Introduction to Midas (Ione) Section
Midas was a mining camp 50 miles southwest of Austin. For some unknown reason to us, the camp of Ione was renamed Midas some time about 1885, and the name stuck for at least 20 years. It is considered by some as one of the remotest mining camps in the west. Only one store was listed there in 1907, a general merchandise store run by F. Schmalling. In 1894, Schmalling had a saloon in Ione and 2 other merchants ran general stores. [Bradstreet Directory, 1886; Commercial Agency Book, 1894; Polk 1907][Ruth Danner’s book Gabbs Valley, Nevada also carries some information on Midas]. Curiously (and remarkably), the names Ione and Midas are omitted from many of the key Nevada works, including Lincoln and Kleinhampl and Ziony. The town falls within the Union District, a very broad district encompassing Berlin to the south. The town was very active in the 1860’s through the early 1870’s, when known ore became depleted. After 1905 there was a revival, but Midas never regained its stature and that of neighboring Berlin, now a state park known for its fossils. The town was known for decades as one of Nevada’s classic ghost towns. The town never had much of a population. Johnson & Cirac’s Miner’s Exchange Saloon must have only lasted a short while, probably during the 1905-1910 period, judging from the appearance of the token. R. C. Johnson was listed as the only proprietor of the saloon in the 1914 Polk Directory. Schmalling still ran his general merchandise store and was also the postmaster. A mercury mining company was active there then as well. This is an extremely rare token, with perhaps four examples known that I am aware of. It is a rare example of a name change to a town that was used for more than 20 years, but never completely stuck. Indeed, the name Ione is the only one remembered today. Any original material from this important early mining camp is very rare.

801. Nye. Millett. Millett Winter Printed Postcard. Printed image of snow covered town, with cattle grazing in foreground. 1/4” white space along bottom of image. Unused, with 1 cent stamp. Millet is a small town located north of Round Mountain west of Alkali Flat. The town was first known as Scheel Ranch after Charles Scheel. When he died, his widow married Albion Bradbury Millet in the 1890’s. The newlyweds chose to live on the old Scheel ranch and the name of the town changed to Millett. In the early 1900’s, a mining boom allowed Mrs. Millet to open a store and a post office opened in 1906. The post office remained opened until 1930, when services were moved to Round Mountain. (Carlson, Nevada Place Names, p.168). This photo reproduction has remarkable photo-like quality. Xf, 3” x 5”. Est. $75-150
802. Nye. Monarch. Monarch/ Bar//GF/ 12 1/2c/ IT. (4) Sc, br, 27mm. Monarch was a mining town that was laid out on the Ralston Desert in 1906, about 12 miles south of Goldfield. Reverend Blanchard sold town lots and mining claims of dubious value. In 1906, a post office was ordered to open. The Western Pacific RR had located an alternate line to Monarch and considered Monarch an excellent division point. On October 18, 1906, the Reno Evening Gazette predicted that the town was to be a mere memory soon. The prophesy came true with Reverend Blanchard leaving debts amounting to $73,000 and stealing investors cash amounting to $75,000. The citizens were all gone by March 1907 and the post office never opened.
It is interesting to note that we have never found Monarch listed in any directory. The story of Monarch lends itself to a mining camp with a fleeting economy, leaving an historian wondering if a merchant who set up there for just a few months might use trade tokens. In all of my research in Nevada from the post-1900 mining camp booms, I can only find one Monarch Bar, and it was in Fairview, run by the Steinheimer Brothers “First Class Bar and Club Rooms.” While I cannot rule out Monarch as the place of origin for this token, it certainly deserves more research. Under any circumstances, it is a scarce token.-fh (Carlson, Nevada Place Names, p.170; 1907-8 Polk Directory). Vf, dark spots, red toning. Est. $150-300

The Liberty is the oldest mine in central They were active throughout the 1860’s as an active producing mine. Raymond in 1870 reported (p144) $35,000 in gold production from 1867 and about $38,000 in 1868 at an average value of about $102 per ton. Browne (1868, p418) also reported on the mine, indicating it had reached a depth of 200 feet by 1867 without encountering water. At that point, George Seitz was still in control. Vic Kral reported in 1951 that the mine may have been operated by Spanish, and was active by white men as early as 1854. The mine remained active throughout the next century, and indeed recorded production in the 1940’s. (Kleinhampl & Ziony, p183). This uncancelled certificate must have paid its owner some dividends, probably kept in the family too long until the ore temporarily ran out in the late 1800’s. None of the principals are listed in the Nevada 1863 Directory in Austin or Clifton, nor are listed in the San Francisco 1865 Directory. 815. Nye. Tonopah. Boston Tonopah Mining Co. Cert. #187. Incorporated in Arizona. Issued to Joseph A. Tostitz for 50 shares in 1903. Signed by George Nixon as president and Geo Wingfield secretary. Vignette at top of a mill in a valley next to a stream with two smaller vignettes of miners underground inspecting ore. Black border with gilt seal and safety print. Uncancelled. Printer - Goes. 6 x 10. Boston Tonopah MC. The certificate was written by George Nixon himself and signed by Nixon and Wingfield, arguable the most powerful pair of on-site western mining financiers, though when this certificate was issued, they had not yet made their fortune at Goldfield or Tonopah. This company was the beginning of a seven year partnership that would make both men millionaires. It emanated from a claim the Wingfield himself staked, later purchasing surrounding ground, and forming the Boston-Tonopah MC. It was next to the Tonopah MC ground, some of the richest in the district. Wingfield, known as a gambler and saloon operator, met Nixon, earning his trust. Much has been written of the pair’s business ventures. “By far the most important of Wingfield’s Tonopah associates was George S. Nixon…The partnership between these two men, which began in October 1902, was to be a remarkable and personal success. It made both men millionaires, guaranteed Nixon’s political future, and transformed George Wingfield from a shrewd local gambler into a national businessman.” Wrote C. E. Raymond in her biography Wingfield, 1992 (p30). “By November 1902…Nixon and Wingfield, along with Wingfield’s fellow dealer from the Tonopah Club Jack Hennessy, were buying and selling stock in two mining companies, the Boston Tonopah and Montana Tonopah, of which William Andrews Clark was a major investor. Nixon also organized the Nye County Bank.” The Montana Tonopah was the first dividend paying mine in the district. The Boston Tonopah may have become part of the Montana Tonopah or another company at a later date. Little is written of the company, and we were unable to track their record. . This certificate is certainly one of the top autographed pieces seen from Tonopah or the post-1900 Nevada gold rush. Extremely fine. Great autograph piece. Est. $300-600

Vignette at left of an antlered elk. Black border with gilt seal, underprint and safety print. Uncancelled. Printer not noted. 8 x 11. Datelined Tonopah, Probably a mine out of Stillwater or Berlin, Nevada with an office in Tonopah. W. F. Ford, the secretary, had the company office at 12 Nyco Building. Leon Cirac, meanwhile, was in Stillwater, listed as a “mining Promoter, while his family, Chas P. Cirac, ran the hotel, saloon, and was Postmaster. (1907 Polk directory). Charlie Cirac was likely the President, since he appears to have been the key source to the income. We know from other records that we have had from the family that Charlie operated a mine in Berlin, Nevada. Leon Cirac must have convinced Nixon & Wingfield, major Nevada mine financiers who would later go on to make a fortune in Goldfield, that this company had significant potential. About the time this certificate was issued, Nixon & Wingfield’s interests in Goldfield were taking off. Tears along fold creases. Water staining on reverse that only slightly bleeds through. One with 3 inch tear on edge. This was the first, and greatest mining company in Tonopah, founded by Jim Butler, Tasker Oddie, and Cal Brougher. By 1902 they had already mined $1.5 million, on the way to nearly $50 million by 1940. The discovery by Butler was phenomenal. He was looking for his burro that had wandered off in May 1900. He found an outcrop of mineralized rock. He had it assayed, didn’t believe the assay, and sent a sample to Tasker Oddie, then a lawyer, for his evaluation. That first sample ran 640 oz/ton silver and $206 in gold. A second sample they had submitted to a Klondike assayer was pronounced worthless. Meanwhile, the Klondike assayer ran a second sample, discovered his error, and took off in pursuit of Butler. But he was too late. Butler stayed up all night staking claims, and had all the ground covered by morning. In the first year alone, he received income of about $250,000 in lease payments. The mines in Tonopah went on to produce more than $150 million, ranking it as a world-class ore deposit. [Ref: Torrence, Spurr, Weed, Carpenter]. Est. $150-350

NEVADA RAILROADS
Special Nevada Railroad Bonds. These pieces cover several counties thus are listed as “Railroad”
The three following railroad Nevada railroad bonds are specimen proof trials from the American Bank Note Company archives. They may be the only examples of these bonds in existence.
888. Railroad. Nevada & Oregon Railroad Co. $1000 Second Mortgage 6% Bond. Unsigned. Cancelled by hole punches at signature lines. Vignette of steam train at upper left, and two caryatid/Sphinx figures at either bottom corner. Black border, printed by ABN. 15” x 10”. 10 coupons attached at left. This company was formed after much discussion and study of the need for rail service in western Nevada and Oregon. It was organized in June, 1880, with the intent of running from Reno south to Aurora and north to the Oregon line. Once again, Myrick noted much consternation in the construction of this rail, with constant arguing among directors and investors. It never got off the ground, and a new company was formed in 1881. Money troubles continued, though some track was laid. No train operated until 1882. The company again reorganized in 1885 as the Nevada California Railroad, and would later become the Nevada California Oregon Railroad. Fine, matting material to which bond is mounted is quite damaged, folds, minor tears at bottom edge. Est. $400-600
889. Railroad. Nevada California Oregon Railway Pass 1899. This pass was issued to F. E. Jones, Asst. General Manager of the Nevada Central Railroad. The pass was issued in 1899 and is signed by E. Gesl manager. Pass #28. Minor staining. Very fine. Est. $200-400
NEVADA RAILWAY
The Nevada Railway was organized in 1878 in San Francisco. The founders proposed to connect Austin with Battle Mountain and the Central Pacific Railroad. Allan Curtis of Austin, was one of the directors as well as manager of the Manhattan Silver Mining Company’s operations at Austin. They group was unable to borrow money from either the Bank of California or the Bank in Austin, run by Curtis. A year later, Anson Stokes became involved (viz: Stokes Castle at Austin). As an early partner in Phelps Dodge, he was keen on Nevada’s metal mining and an investor in the Manhattan SMC, according to Myrick in Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California, 1962. A year later, a new company was formed, breaking up the routes proposed originally into three portions, the Nevada Northern, Nevada Central, and Nevada Southern. The Nevada Central was first, completed in 1880, though the investors argued constantly on which route was to be first and which was more important. The Nevada Northern was to stretch from Battle Mountain north to the Idaho line, hoping to continue to the Columbia River. The Nevada Southern was to run south from Austin to Cloverdale, near Grantsville, hoping to continue south to Columbus and the Carson & Colorado Railroad.
Many stories exist about the various affairs of the three lines, including scandal and “all manner of allegations” according to Myrick. The roads saw no construction or positive movement during 1880. The Nevada Central was purchased by the Union Pacific in 1881. But the new ownership was short lived, and the rail was dumped by UPRR: “Mining railroads are a species of railroad gambling.” Stokes rekindled the railroad in 1888 under his control, changing the name to Nevada Central Railroad. The Nevada Southern and Nevada Northern never made it past the planning stage.
The following two lots are related pieces to the story above. Both are specimen proofs from the ABN archives and may be the only examples extant.
890. Railroad. Nevada Central Railway Bond. $1000 First Mortgage 6% Gold Bond. Full page of coupons attached at left, and folded. Specimen Proof. (Poor’s Manual of Railroads, 1906, p.651). Vf, wrinkles, folds. Est. $500-1000

One 25 cent Nevada revenue stamp and one 25 cent documentary stamp adhered at left edge. Brown stains at edges and at bottom. 936. Storey. Virginia City. Virginia Property Transfer Deed, 1859. This is one of the earliest documents ever seen from Virginia City. Dated June 6, 1859. The deed is for the sale of property owned by James Kanana. He sold a “certain tunnel and claim, known as the Spring Tunnel on Ciment Hill (on the south side)…” J. B. H. Scheel and Fritz Marohn purchased the claim for $50. The document is signed by James Kanaha and Gustav Melsing. Extremely fine. This document came from the extensive Gould & Curry archive that we sold in the last sale. I held this letter out because it needed more research. This document is believed to be from Virginia City. It was written just a few days after the discovery , the date of which is uncertain, but seems to be about the week of June 1, 1859, which even DeGroot admitted to in his work. The exact date is unknown because of the shenanigans pulled by the first district recorder, William Campbell, who altered dates, switched pages, and otherwise conspired with others to obscure the course of history. Elliott Lord touched on it in Comstock Mining and Miners, and I have discussed it in detail in an upcoming book on the Gould & Curry after detailed inspection of the first recorder’s Book in the Virginia City Court House. The term Cement (spelled Ciment here) Hill was also used in the early records, but its location is unknown today. Many of the early names were changed early on. The term “spring” was used regularly by the early locators. Spring Hill, placer, etc were used by one of the Winters family and by another group of prospectors headed by A. G. Hammock et al. These principals were not found within the first dozen locations shown in the Recorder’s book, but a transaction of sale would not necessarily be found in the location book, but rather in a deed book, none of which exists from that period, which necessitated the many lawsuits over the next year regarding who sold what to who, when and for how much. Many of the original papers have been located and are in the possession of the University of Nevada today. Of particular note, none of the people on this document show up in Nevada City or Grass Valley registers, indicating that they were probably Gold Canyon miners. We were unable to locate a complete copy of Dolman’s records to see if their names appeared there. In summary, it would take additional research to tie these men directly and independently to the Comstock, but the mere presence of this document among the Gould & Curry archive, in addition to the specific date of the document is no mere coincidence. If we had a specific tie, this document would be the earliest document of the Comstock extant.-fh Est $500-1500
