SO-CALLED DOLLARS

The collection of so-called dollars started out as an offshoot of the coin business. For more than a century, coins about the size of a silver dollar have been produced commemorating various events in our history. The silver dollar was our most popular coin according to many authors, so it made sense to have these historical commemorative pieces made about this size.

Along came collectors, not too many at first, clamoring for information on these coins. The term “so-called dollars” emerged. Harold Hibler and Charlie Kappan followed in the footsteps of Richard Kenney and published today’s standard reference for these coins So Called Dollars, in 1963. The Hibler-Kappan book contains references to hundreds of so-called dollars. It is far from complete, but is a milestone in numismatics. It is not just a listing of pieces, categorized by event, such as the Centennial Exhibition in 1876, but it tells stories about the coins themselves. Hibler-Kappan often wrote the makers of these coins, and from this information we gleen new aspects of collecting that make the hobby fun. This is my favorite aspect of the book. On the downside, the book’s numbering system and inclusdion criteria are poorly, designed, conceived and thus someday, new authors will have to completely redo the book, a tedious task.

Hibler-Kappan listed all issues they could find struck before December 31, 1960. We have found several of unlisted pieces which have been placed. Some of these represent varietal differences in pieces already known. Others are completely new to this reference.

Early collectors of so-called dollars seemed to care little for condition, though Hibler noted his prices were for XF condition. Our chief consignor was a condition census man, and every example he collected was generally the finest piece he found over an approximate 30 year period. The estimates placed on the pieces reflect a rarity as given by Hibler-Kappan in conjunction with condition. We were unable to find any published auction records to substantiate values, either high or low.

So-Called Dollars is a growing collecting field. For those just beginning, it may represent a chance to find unusual and rare coins in dealer’s junk boxes, though these will generally not be condition census material. For advanced collectors, we hope this section will offer a unique opportunity to acquire new pieces. This section is followed by Souvenir Medals and Storecards. Many of these arguably should be So Called Dollars but were eliminated by HK’s criteria.
