A wonderful collection of modern color postcards of different views of Tonopah. Most of the shots were taken in the 1960-70’s, one of the recent boom times for Tonopah. Around 1970, Anaconda began developing a mine 30 miles northeast of Tonopah to produce molybdenum. As part of this mine operation, Anaconda built a new neighborhood near the present day Nye County Courthouse. The price of moly(bdenum) dropped, the mine closed. During the 1980’s, the town was again was booming due to the extremely high price of gold, over $800. A minor boom hit Tonopah in the mid 1990’s when Equatorial began developing a copper open pit on the same property as Anaconda tried for moly. Unfortunately, the venture failed after a short 5 years sending Tonopah into its toughest depression yet. Several of the hotels and businesses shown on these cards are no longer in business. Even the famous Jim Butler Days is a mere shell of what it was once. One of the postcards is oversize measuring 6 x 9”. All Xf. Est. $30-60 1268. Nye. Tonopah. Tonopah Drink Tokens. Established in 1947 by Mrs. Charles Mapes and her son Charles, the Mapes Hotel and Casino has grown to be a symbol of Reno in the hearts of many. Its closure in 1982 left many to muse over fond memories, hopeful for a resurrection. After almost 20 years of vacancy, plans were in motion to restore the building, and convert the 12-story landmark into a time-share. But by 2000, after much controversy over its architectural soundness, and debates over its use, plans to demolish the building were made by city officials. Sadly, all that remains is an empty lot, occasionally occupied by small events. These chips are among the many relics collected from the hotel.
