This is not Columbia near Goldfield but rather Columbus, as in Columbus Salt Marsh located near Coaldale near the modern junction of Hwy 6 and Hwy 95 in west central Nevada. B&W, 5” x 7”. Xf. 549. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Albemarle Mining & Milling Co. Cert. #921. Incorporated in Wyoming in 1904. Issued to D.Y. Gaines for 1000 shares in 1910. Signed by president Hayes and asst. secretary R.M. Frank. Uncancelled. Burgundy border, no printer noted. 7 1/4” x 11”. The company owned about 20 acres in the eastern part of the Goldfield district. In 1923, the Hunchbell M&MC took over the property. Ore was said to assay at $20 gold per ton. (Mines Handbook, 1925, p.1373). Vf, folds, lower left edge folded. Rare. Est. $25-75

Monopoly makes the citizens of Goldfield Shiver in the Cold. 7500 applicants (sic) for coal and fuel offering $95.00 per ton in cash for the cheapest fuel in the U.S.” A long line extends from the front of the Brown Palace Hotel. Adjoined with the Brown Palace is the Goldfield Daily Tribune building. There is about 1 foot of snow on the ground. White border. View is very clear and crisp. Est. $25-50

The first is captioned “Rapid Transit in Goldfield, Nevada.” and shows a small wagon hitched up two burros. The cards are nearly identical, but vary by color, one b/w and one yellow. The other two cards are slightly different but essentially show the same thing, a small boy with a whiskey bottle to the mouth of a burro. One of the cards is postmarked Goldfield, 1912. 563. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Columbia Mountain MC. Cert. #393. Incorporated in South Dakota in 1904. Issued to R.P. Dunlap for 1000 shares in 1905. Signed by president George Nixon and secretary Fenwick. Vignette at left of miners working in underground mining scene, with several small images of miners throughout the border. Black border, gilt seal and underprint. Printed by GOES, distributed by John Partridge, Printer, SF. 8 1/4” x 11”. George Nixon was a banker for the First National Bank of Winnemucca and made his fortune by being at the right place at the right time. Harry Stimler, discoverer of Goldfield, sold all of his properties to Nixon in 1903-1904 for $1000. Nixon also was the one man posse chasing down George Graham Rice, living just long enough to see Rice go to prison. This was one of Nixon’s early companies. Vf, folds. Est. $100-200

All of the cards are by Allen Photo of Goldfield. 2 show the Combination Mine and Mill, one is b/w on white paper the other has a yellow hue and is on yellow paper. 3 very similar cards show the Famous Mohawk Mine and vary by the color of the paper, two are b/w on white paper, one postmarked Goldfield, 1907, the other has a yellow hue printed on yellow paper. 566. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Den Brothel Photo Postcard. This a repro card that was originally taken in 1907. The scene shows individual entrances with the girl’s name in a line along a street. Sadie, Sylvia and Jessie are names visible in the shot. At left and attached to the Den, is the Ajax & Martine building. At the right side of the card are two hand drawn woman standing next to a hand drawn wall. Uncommon use of hand drawn enhancements on photographs. Please see the token offered in this sale. Vf. 567. Esmeralda. Goldfield. Red Light District (The Den) Original Photograph, c.1907-1910. Photograph is 10” x 20” and shows a view of where the Den brothel is (was) located. When the photograph was taken, the building might not have been the Den, but it was still the Red Light District of Goldfield. We compared this photograph with the postcard lot above and they are of the same buildings. The shot shows a man standing in front of a building with a Ford parked at the right. The building shown at the right is where the “Ladies” resided and the actual saloon was just left. The photo has a blemish at left and near bottom edge. These blemishes do not detract from the great view. Vf. Est. $100-300

It shows 2 miners filling an ore bag with the caption “106, First Stope, January Lease, Goldfield, Nev.” To the right of the image is a classic note written to a friend “June 21, 06, Goldfield, Nev., This is the kind of work I did in Inyo Co, Cal., but we did not get a mine like this one. Frank.” Postmarked 3 different times, one from Goldfield, 1906 and one from San Francisco, 1906, the third is not legible. Published by Miner’s Drug Store, Inc, Tonopah, Nev. Minor dirt smudges. Vf. Although, the company either was working the Florence and/or Mohawk mines or it borrowed the names of two of the most famous mines in the Goldfield/Tonopah area. One of the views is looking toward Columbia Mt, by Edward Mitchell, brown hue to card (brown sepia tone). One card is chromolitho also looking toward Columbia Mt., but less of a panorama than the first described, published by Gray News, SLC. The last 2 cards are a panorama set with an impressive overview of Goldfield. Photos by P. E. Kennedy, published by Nevada Post Card Co. When the 2 cards are put together the panoramic view is completed. The left card is #2474 and is captioned that it goes with card #1. The earliest view shows the mill in the middle of construction with the building frame less than half completed. The machinery and tanks that the siding hides after completion is visible in this shot. The card offers compliments to O. F. Jonasson & Co, postmarked Hudson Term Sta, NY, 1908. 2 cards are views of the mill nearing completion. Framing is complete and the siding is nearly complete. The left side (north) does not yet have the completed siding. Also, in these views, a smaller building that was built at a later date is missing. One card is captioned “After Goldfield Nevada Fire July 6, 1923” with a shot of the National Hotel sign that is damaged by fire with the words “Free Garage in Connection, Fire Proof, Moderate Prices.” Guess the building was not fire proof, the hotel burned to the ground. One card shows “mother Stell with dog Fritz” on an outcrop in Goldfield. Another card with a view of the interior of the Catholic church at Christmas, 1912, postmarked Goldfield, 1913. The 4th card shows an exterior shot of the Goldfield Hotel by Frasher’s.
