834. Nye. Midas (Ione). Miners Exchange/ Saloon/ Johnson/ & Cirac/ Midas.// GF/ One/ Drink/ Or/ Cigar. Rd, br, 24mm. Vf. Reverse is more worn than obverse. Midas was a mining camp 50 miles southwest of Austin. For some unknown reason to us, the camp of Ione was renamed Midas some time about 1885, and the name stuck for at least 20 years. It is considered by some as one of the remotest mining camps in the west. Only one store was listed there in 1907, a general merchandise store run by F. Schmalling. In 1894, Schmalling had a saloon in Ione and 2 other merchants ran general stores (Burchard Directory, 1886; Commercial Agency Book, 1894; Polk, 1907). Curiously, and remarkably, the names Ione and Midas are omitted from many of the key Nevada works, including Lincoln, Klienhampl and Ziony. The town falls within the Union District, a very broad district encompassing Berlin to the South. The town was very active in the 1860's through the early 1870's, when known ore became depleted. After 1905 there was a revival, but Midas never regained its stature and that of neighboring Berlin, now a State Park known for its fossils. The town was known for decades as one of Nevada's classic ghost towns. The town never had much of a population. Johnson & Cirac's Miner's Exchange Saloon must have only lasted a short while, probably during the 1905-10 period, judging from the appearance of the trade token. R. C. Johnson was listed as the only proprietor of the saloon in the 1914 Polk Directory. Schmalling still ran his general store and was also the postmaster. A mercury mine was active there during this same period of time. This is an extremely rare token. We offered a similar token in Auction #13, but that token was in a little better condition. This token offered here is one of the 4 known that were inventoried in the Nevada Trade Token Book. Hubbard found (or dug) this token himself. Vf, reverse is worn to a fine condition, obverse has wear to high points. Est. $500-1000
