Summary of Sale #17 Results
The December 14 sale showered us with world record prices in a number of categories. The message from collectors was overwhelmingly “We want the rare stuff!”
Arizona set new standards. The Spenazuma stock certificate had intense phone bidding, hammering at $2300 on a $750-1500 estimate. The Total Wreck was again very popular at $1092. The Arizona Queen and Silver Cloud stocks each set new standards for Tombstone material at $1955 and $2070 respectively.
In California, there was intense bidding on the truly rare material. The rare Inyo County 1886 pamphlet printed in Independence sold for $1437.50. The Chrysolite stock certificate from Mono County sold for $805. The Beautiful and rare Sacramento illustrated lettersheet sold for $1955 with intense floor and phone bidding, another record for our firm. The New Almaden correspondence from the gold rush era sold for $2875.
Colorado was strong, but not record setting.
Nevada set a number of world records. The Elko photo postcard of Garcia sold for $2185, thought to be a world record for a western photo postcard. The Aurora deeds from 1863 set records. The deed signed by early Comstock pioneer and cousin of George Hearst sold for $1495, while another deed printed in Aurora sold for $805. The rare copy of the Goldfield News, 1907 sold for $575. The Winters Company Milton stock certificate from Virginia City, 1863 sold for $1265.
The rare maps did extremely well. The Wheeler Atlas, a true rarity, sold for $4255. The loose Wheeler maps sold for $1207. The King Comstock folio, 1870, sold for $1955.
Photographs were hot. The Donner cabinet cards sold for $400-500 each. The Tahoe panorama sold for $1725, as did the Virginia City panorama. The circa 1900 Laurel Depot from Santa Cruz County with the Wells Fargo office sign sold for $575. The Carson City Chop House Saloon photos sold for $747.50. The Bawdy Women photo sold for $977.50. The McFarland photographs of the burning cable cars sold for $1035.
Ingots generally sold for record prices. The Molitor Tin Ingot sold for $4600. The Temescal Tin Ingot went for $1955. The small Silverton Ingot sold for $5462, and the Bertha Ingot from Dakota Territory sold for $10,062. The US Mint Ingots sold at record levels, including lots 1006, USAO, SF for $1725, lot 1009, Philadelphia Mint for $1840. The Comstock Ingot sold for $7762.
As usual, the gold specimens were very popular, highlighted by the beautiful white gold in quartz specimen with a cut surface that sold for $3450.
The Art got mixed results, generally at low levels. While the overall consensus of the J. LaVerne Lane paintings was that they were outstanding, the art market did not participate because the artist is not a “Listed” artist, indicating that the art market does not consider quality an issue in art sales. The top selling piece was Martin’s prospector scene at $2185 purchased by Fred Holabird against phone bidders.
There were also bargains: Bodie Bluff signed by Leland Stanford $747.50; Yosemite 1860’s CDV $97.75; Lincoln autograph on certificate $2990.
